"Specter," Ember said, her voice soft but clear. "I've been waiting for you."
Silas stopped, his mind buzzing with questions. But he knew they couldn't stay here, not with the System's eyes everywhere. "We can't talk here," he said quietly. "It's not safe."
Ember nodded. "You're right. Come with me."
She turned and walked quickly through the square. Silas followed, watching everything around them. They moved fast, dodging the few people out so late and avoiding the drones that hummed overhead. Ember led him to a small alley, a dark and forgotten place in Alexanderplatz. It was away from the lights and the cameras, a place where they might not be seen.
The alley was small and dirty, and it smelled bad. It was very different from the clean, perfect world the System wanted everyone to see. Here, the walls were covered in dirt and old posters. Ember stopped at a plain door that looked old and worn. It was easy to miss, like it wasn't even there. She pulled out a small tool from her cloak. It was shiny and high-tech, a stark contrast to the old door. She used it to open the lock. The door clicked, and Silas saw a dark stairway going down. It looked damp and unwelcoming.
"Go ahead," Ember said, pointing to the stairs. Her voice was calm, but Silas could see she was ready for anything.
Silas took a breath and went down into the dark. Ember followed close behind, her footsteps quiet. The stairs were steep, and the air got colder and wetter as they went down. The walls were rough and uneven. They reached the bottom and found a narrow tunnel. Pipes and wires covered the walls, running in every direction. It felt like they were underground, hidden away from the world. A single light bulb hung from the ceiling, making long, shaky shadows that danced on the walls.
"Where are we going?" Silas asked. His voice echoed in the tunnel, sounding loud in the small space.
"Somewhere safe," Ember said. "Somewhere we can talk without being heard."
She led him through the tunnel. Her steps were sure and steady. They walked for a long time, deeper and deeper into the earth. All they could hear was water dripping from the ceiling and machines humming far away. The air was thick and heavy, and Silas could feel the weight of the city above them. Finally, they came to a small room. It was a surprise to see it there, hidden under the city. Shelves full of books and tools lined the walls. There were maps, computers, and other strange devices. A table stood in the middle of the room, with a soft light shining on it. It looked like a place where someone lived and worked.
"Welcome to my safe place," Ember said. She turned to Silas, and he could finally see her face clearly. Her eyes were bright and intelligent, and her expression was serious. "Here, we are safe. Here, we can talk freely."
To be continued.
