WHISPERS IN THE DARK
Elina Fernandes always thought her life was ordinary. At twenty-four, she lived with her family in a quiet suburban house, surrounded by the predictable rhythm of daily life. Her mother, Margaret, was caring and perceptive, often noticing things others missed. Her father, Daniel, practical and protective, rarely indulged in what he called “overactive imaginations.” And her younger sister, Sophia, was a whirlwind of energy, laughter, and the occasional mischievous observation that sometimes made Elina wonder if the little girl could see things adults couldn’t.
But that night, ordinary ceased to exist.
The power had flickered, casting long shadows across the living room walls. Elina had been sitting by the window, notebook in hand, trying to sketch a new design for work, when she heard it. A whisper.
Soft, almost imperceptible, it came from somewhere behind her.
“Elina…”
She froze, heart hammering in her chest. Her eyes darted around the darkened room. The curtains swayed slightly, though no breeze had entered through the closed window. Her mother was asleep upstairs; her father, deep in his study; and Sophia, in her room, fast asleep. There was no one else in the house.
“Elina…”
Again. Closer this time.
A chill ran down her spine. She whispered back, almost afraid of her own voice.
“Who’s there?”
Silence.
She pressed herself against the couch, every muscle tense, listening. But nothing moved. The house was silent, except for the hum of the refrigerator and the faint sound of the clock ticking on the wall. Yet something didn’t feel right. Something… unseen.
Her phone buzzed on the coffee table. She grabbed it, hoping for a rational distraction. A message. Unknown number.
“Don’t ignore the whispers.”
Elina’s fingers trembled as she reread it. She wanted to dismiss it — a prank, maybe, or a wrong number — but her gut twisted with unease. She felt eyes on her, though she was alone.
Suddenly, the shadows along the walls seemed to stretch and shift. One corner of the room darkened more than the rest, as if the darkness itself had taken shape. Her breath quickened.
And then she heard footsteps.
Soft, deliberate. Approaching from the hallway.
Elina’s instincts screamed at her to run upstairs, lock the door, and never look back. But curiosity — a dangerous, irresistible curiosity — anchored her to the spot.
A shadow appeared at the edge of her vision, tall, calm, and impossibly still. And then he stepped into the dim light.
Adrian Cole.
His eyes met hers, sharp and unreadable, but something in them made her heart skip. A strange mixture of fear and intrigue settled over her.
“You heard it too, didn’t you?” he asked, voice low, almost a whisper, matching the eeriness of the room.
Elina opened her mouth, but no words came.
Adrian took a step closer, the shadows seeming to cling to him rather than her. “You’re not alone,” he said. “But it’s only beginning.”
Her notebook slipped from her hands, pages scattering across the floor. The whispers returned, louder now, echoing through the room.
“Elina…”
And in that moment, the ordinary world she knew ended.
The darkness had begun its game.
To be continued…
