Shadow Keepers Of The Crimson Clock

Shadow Keepers Of The Crimson Clock

THE CLOCKWORK MURDERS

Emilia Grayson stared at the intricate mechanisms of her latest creation, her mind racing with the possibilities. The clockwork device, a delicate fusion of gears and springs, ticked away with a soft, mechanical hum. It was her masterpiece – a device that could manipulate time itself.

Or so she had thought.

The reality, it seemed, was far more sinister.

A knock at the door broke her concentration. Emilia's assistant, Jenkins, poked his head in, his expression twisted with concern. "Emilia, you need to see this. The police are here."

Emilia's heart skipped a beat. "What is it?"

"They're saying...they're saying it was one of yours," Jenkins whispered, his eyes darted around the room as if afraid of being overheard.

Emilia's mind reeled as she followed Jenkins to the entrance of her workshop. Two officers stood there, their faces somber. Between them, a young woman's body lay on the ground, her eyes frozen in a permanent scream. A thin, metallic thread connected her wrist to a small, ornate box – a box that looked eerily familiar.

"No," Emilia breathed, her vision blurring. The box was one of hers, a prototype she'd worked on months ago. But it was supposed to be a simple alarm clock, not a...a murder device.

The lead officer, Detective Adrien LaFleur, stepped forward. "Emilia Grayson, we need to ask you some questions about this."

Emilia numbly nodded, her gaze still fixed on the box. The victim's face was pale, her eyes...Emilia looked away, bile rising in her throat.

Adrien's voice was firm. "Mademoiselle Grayson, can you explain this?"

Emilia took a deep breath, trying to gather her thoughts. "I...I designed that box as a prototype for a new line of alarm clocks. It's a clockwork device that uses a unique mechanism to...to manipulate time, in a sense."

The officers exchanged skeptical glances. "Manipulate time?" one of them repeated.

Emilia hesitated, realizing how it sounded. "Not exactly...It's more like it can create a...a temporal anomaly. But it's not supposed to be lethal. I swear, I didn't know it would do this."

As Emilia spoke, she felt a presence behind her. She turned to see Lyra standing at the edge of the crowd, her long, silver hair blowing in the wind. Their eyes met, and for a moment, Emilia felt a shiver run down her spine.

What was Lyra doing here?

Adrien's voice brought her back. "We'll need to take you in for questioning, Mademoiselle Grayson."

Emilia nodded, still in shock. As she turned to follow the officers, she caught a glimpse of Lyra mouthing something – "I'll find you."

The police station was a blur of fluorescent lights and sterile smells. Emilia sat in a cold, metal chair, Adrien across from her. "Tell me more about this prototype, Emilia. What made you think it was safe?"

Emilia rubbed her temples, trying to recall every detail. "I was working on a new type of clockwork mechanism, something that could...could bend time, in a way. It was just a prototype, not meant for production."

Adrien leaned forward. "Bend time? How?"

Emilia hesitated, unsure how to explain. "Imagine a clock that doesn't just keep time, but manipulates it. The prototype was supposed to...to create small temporal loops, allowing people to...to relive moments."

Adrien's expression turned skeptical. "And you thought that was safe?"

Emilia shook her head. "No, I...I didn't think it would kill anyone. I swear, I didn't know."

The questioning went on for hours, Adrien's eyes never leaving Emilia's face. Finally, he leaned back. "We'll need to hold you for further questioning, Mademoiselle Grayson."

As the officers led her away, Emilia caught a glimpse of Lyra standing outside, her eyes fixed on Emilia's.

What was Lyra involved in?

The cell was cold, dark, and lonely. Emilia's mind whirled with questions. Who was behind this? And what did they want?

The hours ticked by, the city's clock towers chiming in the distance. Emilia's eyelids grew heavy...

And then, she heard it – a soft ticking, like her clockwork device. But it was different, louder...

Emilia's eyes snapped open. The ticking grew louder, the sound of gears clicking into place. The cell door creaked open...
