Emilia's mind whirled as she walked alongside Lyra and Detective Adrien. The streets of Arkham seemed to darken, shadows lengthening like skeletal fingers. "What does this mean?" Emilia asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Who would want to frame me?"
Adrien's expression was grim. "That's what I'm trying to figure out. Your work, Emilia...it's getting attention. Attention from people who shouldn't be interested."
Lyra's gaze swept the surroundings, her eyes glinning in the fading light. "We should get Emilia safe. Now."
As they approached Emilia's flat, a chill ran down her spine. The door was ajar. "I...I didn't leave it like that," Emilia stammered.
Adrien pushed the door open, his hand on his gun. "Stay back."
The flat was a mess – papers scattered, furniture overturned. Emilia's heart sank. Her research, her notes...everything was gone. She felt a pang of loss, like a part of her had been ripped away.
Lyra's voice was a whisper. "They were looking for something specific."
Adrien turned to Emilia. "What did they take?"
Emilia's mind racing, she scanned the room. "My...my notes on the Crimson Clock. I was researching it, thinking it might be a key to understanding the temporal anomalies."
Lyra's eyes locked onto Emilia's. "The Crimson Clock? You shouldn't be playing with that."
Adrien frowned. "What's the Crimson Clock?"
Emilia hesitated. "A...a legend. An ancient device said to control time itself."
The room fell silent. Outside, the city's clock towers began to chime midnight. The sound sent a shiver down Emilia's spine.
As the last chime faded, Emilia's phone buzzed. A message from an unknown sender: "Meet me at the old clock tower. Come alone."
Lyra's eyes narrowed. "It's a trap."
Adrien's jaw clenched. "We'll go. Together."
Emilia's heart pounded. "But what if it's a trap? What if they're waiting for us?"
Lyra's voice was calm. "We'll be ready."
Adrien nodded. "We'll take backup. We'll surround the clock tower."
As they made their way to the clock tower, the city's streets seemed to grow darker, the shadows twisting with malevolent intent. Emilia felt a sense of unease, like she was walking into a nightmare.
The clock tower loomed ahead, its face a pale, ghostly moon. Adrien signaled to his team, positioning them around the perimeter.
Lyra leaned in, her voice a whisper. "Be careful, Emilia. We're not alone here."
Emilia nodded, her heart racing. As they entered the clock tower, the air grew thick with tension.
The voice echoed from the shadows. "Welcome, Emilia. I've been waiting."
Emilia's eyes adjusted to the darkness. A figure emerged, its face hidden in shadows.
"Who are you?" Adrien demanded, his gun trained on the figure.
The figure laughed, the sound sending shivers down Emilia's spine. "You don't remember me, Emilia? I'm hurt."
The figure stepped forward, its face revealed in the dim light. Emilia's eyes widened in shock.
It was her brother, thought dead for years.
