Chapter 3 — The Shadow in the Wind

Some things…

Were waiting to escape.

The dark mist twisted slowly at the edge of the floating island, moving like smoke carried by the wind. Luna’s eyes widened as the peaceful silence around them suddenly felt heavy and uneasy.

“Haru… what is that?” she whispered.

Haru didn’t answer immediately. His eyes were fixed on the mist, sharp and focused.

“It’s something that slipped through a door,” he finally said quietly.

The shadow began to move closer, stretching along the ground like a living thing.

Luna instinctively stepped back.

“Stay behind me,” Haru said, raising one arm slightly to block her path.

“But what is it?” Luna asked again.

“A fragment of darkness,” he replied. “They’re born from abandoned doors… from places where balance breaks.”

The mist suddenly surged forward.

Luna gasped as the wind grew stronger around them. The once-beautiful island now felt like it was holding its breath.

Haru reached into his jacket and pulled out a small silver charm shaped like a key. The charm glowed softly in his hand.

“What is that?” Luna asked.

“A seal,” Haru said simply.

The shadow lunged toward them.

Haru stepped forward without hesitation. The charm in his hand shone brighter, sending a wave of golden light across the ground.

The dark mist screeched as the light touched it.

Luna watched in shock.

The peaceful boy who had spoken so calmly before now moved with quiet determination. Every step he took was careful, controlled.

The shadow swirled violently, trying to escape the light.

“Go back!” Haru shouted.

The charm flashed again.

The golden light spread like sunlight breaking through clouds, pushing the darkness away little by little.

For a moment, it seemed like the shadow might win. It twisted wildly, reaching out toward Luna.

Her heart jumped.

“Haru—!”

Before the shadow could get closer, Haru slammed the glowing charm toward the ground.

A bright burst of light filled the island.

The mist froze.

Then slowly, piece by piece, it began to dissolve into the air until nothing remained but silence.

The wind softened again.

The glowing flowers along the stone path gently swayed as if nothing had happened.

Luna let out a shaky breath she didn’t realize she had been holding.

“Is… is it gone?” she asked.

Haru lowered the charm, the glow fading from it.

“Yes,” he said quietly.

Luna looked around the island again. The sky was still beautiful, the waterfalls still shining like crystals. Yet now she understood something she hadn’t before.

This world wasn’t only magical.

It was fragile.

“You protect this place… don’t you?” she said softly.

Haru didn’t look at her right away.

“It’s my responsibility,” he replied.

Luna studied his expression. Even though he sounded calm, she could see how serious he was about it.

She took a small step closer.

“Well,” she said gently, “you’re not alone right now.”

Haru glanced at her in surprise.

The wind passed quietly between them.

For some reason, Luna felt certain of one thing.

This mysterious boy—and the strange doors he guarded—were now part of her life.

And somehow…

Her story with him had only just begun.
