Chapter 4 — A Promise Under the Sky

Her story with him had only just begun.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

The wind flowed softly across the floating island, carrying the faint scent of glowing flowers. The waterfalls sparkled under the golden sky as if the world itself had returned to peace.

But Luna’s heart was still racing.

She glanced at Haru, who stood quietly beside the stone path, staring into the distance as if listening to something only he could hear.

“Does that happen often?” Luna finally asked.

Haru turned slightly. “What do you mean?”

“The shadow,” she said. “Things escaping from the doors.”

Haru looked up at the sky for a moment before answering.

“Not always,” he said. “But it happens enough.”

Luna frowned a little. “And you deal with them alone every time?”

“Yes.”

His answer was simple. Too simple.

Luna folded her arms lightly. “That sounds exhausting.”

Haru blinked, clearly not expecting that response.

“It’s my responsibility,” he repeated quietly.

“But responsibilities can still be heavy,” Luna replied.

For a moment, Haru didn’t know what to say.

Most people he had met either feared the doors or tried to run away from them. Luna was different. Instead of fear, her eyes were filled with curiosity—and something warmer.

Concern.

She walked ahead a few steps, looking around the island more carefully now.

The floating islands drifted peacefully across the sky, and tiny glowing lights danced in the air like fireflies.

“It’s beautiful here,” she said softly.

Haru followed her slowly.

“Yes,” he said. “But beauty doesn’t always mean safety.”

Luna knelt beside a small glowing flower growing near the stone path. Its petals shimmered like soft lantern light.

She smiled.

“Even so… I’m glad I saw it.”

Haru watched her quietly.

Something about the way she spoke—so honest and gentle—felt strangely comforting.

Suddenly, Luna stood up and turned toward him with a bright expression.

“Haru,” she said.

“Yes?”

“I want to help you.”

Haru’s eyes widened slightly.

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

Luna puffed her cheeks a little. “You didn’t even think about it.”

“That’s because it’s dangerous,” he replied calmly. “Humans aren’t meant to be involved with the doors.”

“But I already am,” Luna pointed out.

Haru paused.

She wasn’t wrong.

She had seen the door.

She had crossed it.

And she had faced the darkness that came from it.

The wind brushed gently past them again.

Luna placed her hands behind her back and smiled.

“I’m not saying I’ll fight monsters,” she said playfully. “But I can at least walk with you.”

Haru studied her face.

There was no fear in her eyes—only determination.

After a long moment of silence, he sighed softly.

“…You’re very stubborn.”

Luna laughed.

“I prefer the word brave.”

For the first time since meeting her, the corner of Haru’s lips lifted ever so slightly.

“Fine,” he said. “But you stay close to me.”

Luna’s eyes sparkled with excitement.

“Does that mean we’re partners now?”

Haru shook his head.

“Don’t get ahead of yourself.”

But as they continued walking along the floating island together, something subtle had changed between them.

The quiet guardian of the doors was no longer walking alone.

And somewhere in the gentle wind of that strange world, a new promise had quietly begun to form.
