Chapter 5 — The Whispering Path
A new promise had quietly begun to form.
The two of them continued walking along the narrow stone path that curved across the floating island. The sky above glowed softly, shifting between warm shades of gold and pale blue.
Luna kept looking around with bright curiosity.
Everywhere she turned, something magical caught her attention—glowing flowers, drifting lights, and small crystal-like stones shining along the ground.
“It feels like a dream,” she said softly.
Haru walked a few steps ahead of her, his hands in his pockets.
“You’ll get used to it,” he replied.
“I don’t want to get used to it,” Luna said quickly.
Haru glanced back at her.
“If I get used to it,” she continued, “maybe I’ll stop noticing how beautiful it is.”
Haru looked at her for a moment, slightly surprised.
Most people would focus on the danger of this world.
But Luna kept noticing its beauty.
They reached the end of the floating island, where another path made of old stone stretched toward a second, smaller island.
Between them was a narrow bridge made from glowing crystal.
Luna stopped.
“Wait… we’re walking on that?”
Haru nodded calmly.
“It’s stable.”
“That’s not very convincing,” Luna muttered.
Still, she carefully stepped onto the bridge.
The crystal beneath her feet shimmered gently as she walked.
Below them, the sky stretched endlessly, filled with drifting clouds.
Luna held her arms slightly out for balance.
“Haru… if I fall…”
“You won’t,” he interrupted.
“How do you know?”
“Because I won’t let you.”
Luna blinked.
His voice had been quiet, but confident.
Somehow, those words made her feel safer.
They reached the second island safely.
This island looked different. Old stone ruins stood quietly among tall grass, their surfaces covered in glowing vines.
In the center stood another wooden door.
But this one looked older.
And darker.
Luna slowly approached it.
“This door feels… different,” she said quietly.
Haru nodded.
“It hasn’t been sealed yet.”
Luna turned to him in surprise. “You mean the shadow from earlier came from here?”
“Possibly,” Haru said.
He walked up to the door and examined it carefully.
The wood trembled slightly, as if something behind it was pushing against it.
Luna felt a small chill run down her spine.
“Do we close it?” she asked.
Haru pulled the silver key-shaped charm from his pocket again.
“Yes.”
He placed his hand gently on the door.
The charm began glowing brighter.
Golden light spread slowly across the wooden surface, forming glowing symbols that Luna couldn’t understand.
The door shook once.
Then twice.
Finally, the light sealed across it like a lock.
The trembling stopped.
Silence returned.
Haru stepped back.
“It’s done.”
Luna stared at the door in amazement.
“You just saved a whole world… like it was nothing.”
Haru shook his head slightly.
“It’s never nothing.”
Luna looked at him carefully.
For someone who carried such a huge responsibility, he seemed strangely quiet about it.
But before she could say anything else, a gentle breeze swept across the island.
Tiny glowing lights floated through the air again.
Luna smiled softly.
“Haru?”
“Yes?”
“I’m really glad I followed that door.”
Haru looked at her for a moment.
Then he turned away slightly.
“…You might regret it someday.”
Luna tilted her head.
“Maybe,” she said.
“But right now… I don’t.”
And as the wind whispered through the ruins and the sealed door stood quietly behind them, their strange journey continued deeper into the world beyond the doors.
