[FIRST PAGE - OPENING SCENE]
The humid air of Taytay, Rizal clings to everything – the faded denim jackets stacked on Lilith’s folding table, the strands of hair stuck to her forehead, even the crumpled fifty-peso bills she tucks into her worn canvas pouch. It’s four in the afternoon on a Wednesday, and the ukay-ukay section of the public market buzzes with the shouts of vendors, the rustle of plastic bags, and the distant honk of jeepneys.
Lilith Reyes (19) runs her fingers over a vintage band shirt – its print faded to soft gray, but the stitching still strong. She holds it up to the light, calculating if she can ask for thirty pesos or if twenty is more realistic. That’s when she feels it.
A weight on her back. Not heavy enough to push her forward, but sharp enough to make her shoulders tense. Like someone’s holding a blade just inches from her skin – cold, silent, and impossible to ignore.
She doesn’t turn around. Instead, she folds the shirt carefully, sets it on top of her pile, and calls out to the woman browsing her rack.
LILITH
That one’s cotton – lasts twice as long as the polyester stuff they sell at the mall.
The woman nods, digging into her purse. Lilith lets her eyes scan the crowd out of the corner of her vision – vendors hawking fish and vegetables, kids chasing each other through the aisles, a group of young men in matching black shirts leaning against a nearby wall. One of them is staring right at her.
Tall. Broad shoulders. Dressed in a crisp white button-down that looks completely out of place in the dusty market. His dark hair is pushed back from his face, and his eyes – dark as espresso – don’t blink as they hold hers. Even from ten feet away, she can see the scar that cuts through his left eyebrow, thin as a thread.
The woman hands her a twenty-peso coin. Lilith drops it into her pouch, her fingers brushing against the small can of pepper spray she keeps tucked inside. When she looks up again, the man is gone.
“Lilith!”
Mira pushes through the crowd, holding two plastic cups of iced sago’t gulaman. She sets one down on the table, her eyes following Lilith’s gaze.
MIRA
You look like you’ve seen a ghost. What’s wrong?
Lilith shakes her head, picking up the cup and taking a long sip. The sweet, cold drink slides down her throat, but the feeling of being watched doesn’t fade.
LILITH
Nothing. Just… thought I recognized someone.
Across the market, hidden behind a stack of wooden crates, Draco Caspian watches her laugh as Mira tells her a joke. He pulls out his phone, taps a single message to his right-hand man:
She’s real. Keep an eye on her – but don’t let her notice.
He slips the phone back into his pocket and steps out of the shadows, already planning when he’ll see her again.
