Xiaoman, the Big Boss’s sister, was like a gentle breeze in the middle of a storm. Seeing Chu San covered in bandages, she felt pity for the "poor student." She treated him with kindness, often bringing him snacks or making sure he had a proper chair to sit on while he worked on the script.
For Chu San, Xiaoman was his only hope. He started to believe that maybe, if he stayed close to her, the "Monster" Liu Yi wouldn't be able to hurt him.
But Liu Yi was always watching.
One afternoon, Liu Yi walked onto the set and saw Chu San laughing at something Xiaoman said. His face darkened. He didn't like the "Mummy" getting too comfortable.
"Hey, Finance Boy," Liu Yi shouted, kicking a camera stand. "The script is too boring. Add more action. I want to see more blood."
"But... the story is about loyalty and heart," Chu San argued weakly.
Liu Yi walked over and grabbed Chu San’s bandaged arm, squeezing it just hard enough to make him wince. "In the Walled City, 'heart' is just something we sell at the butcher shop. Write what I told you."
Later that night, the gang held a celebration at a local club. Chu San was forced to attend to "observe the lifestyle." He sat in a corner, clutching his notebook, feeling like a sheep in a den of wolves.
Suddenly, a group of rival gang members burst in. Glass shattered, and chairs flew. Chu San froze in terror. A rival thug saw him—the weakest-looking person in the room—and swung a glass bottle at his head.
Before the bottle could land, a hand caught the thug’s wrist. It was Liu Yi.
With a bored expression, Liu Yi snapped the man’s arm like a dry twig. He didn't even look at the guy as he fell. Instead, Liu Yi looked at Chu San, who was shaking on the floor.
"If you die before finishing my script, I’ll dig you up and kill you again," Liu Yi said, wiping a drop of blood off his own cheek.
The fight ended quickly, but the tension didn't. As they walked back through the dark alleys, Liu Yi noticed Chu San was limping. Without saying a word, he grabbed the back of Chu San’s shirt and hoisted him up, forcing him to walk faster.
"Why are you so weak?" Liu Yi complained. "Don't they teach you how to fight at university?"
"They teach us... macroeconomics," Chu San whispered.
Liu Yi snorted. "Sounds useless. From now on, you stay close to me. If someone tries to hit you, they’re hitting my property. And I hate it when people touch my things."
Chu San looked at the dangerous man walking beside him. He realized his life had become a weird paradox: the man he feared the most was now the only person keeping him alive.
