The First Encounter

Elena couldn’t focus for the rest of the day.

Even when classes changed, even when teachers spoke, even when her friends laughed around her, her mind stayed stuck on one thing—Darian.

“Because if you’re not… then it becomes dangerous.”

Those words repeated in her head like a warning she couldn’t decode.

By the time school ended, most students had already rushed out, excited for freedom. Elena usually left with the crowd, but today she stayed behind longer than usual.

Not because she wanted to.

But because she needed to see something.

She stood near the classroom window, pretending to organize her bag while her eyes subtly searched the hallway.

And then she saw him.

Darian.

Walking alone again.

No friends. No noise. No distraction.

Just silence following him like a shadow.

Elena hesitated.

Her instincts told her to leave it alone.

But her curiosity—stronger than fear—pushed her forward.

“I’ll just see where he’s going,” she whispered to herself. “That’s all.”

She stepped out quietly.

Darian walked at a steady pace through the school gates, not looking back once.

Elena kept her distance.

Far enough not to be noticed.

Close enough not to lose him.

The streets outside were calmer now, the afternoon sun beginning to fade into a soft orange glow. Students passed by in groups, but Darian walked through them like he wasn’t part of the same world.

It was strange.

He didn’t react to anything around him.

No distractions.

No hesitation.

Just direction.

Elena frowned as she followed him around a corner.

Where is he going?

He didn’t take the usual route home.

Instead, he walked deeper into quieter streets.

Older streets.

Places where buildings looked abandoned and time felt slower.

Elena’s steps slowed.

“This is getting weird…” she muttered under her breath.

But she didn’t stop.

Darian turned into a narrow road lined with broken fences and old structures that looked like they hadn’t been used in years.

The air here felt different.

Colder.

Heavier.

Elena wrapped her arms around herself slightly as she followed.

“This is definitely not normal,” she whispered.

Darian finally stopped.

In front of an abandoned building.

It looked old—very old. Cracked walls, faded paint, shattered windows. The kind of place people avoided without questioning why.

Elena quickly ducked behind a wall nearby, hiding as her heart started beating faster.

Why would he come here?

Darian stood still for a moment, staring at the building.

It was too long.

Too focused.

Like he was listening to something inside it.

Then he stepped forward.

And walked in.

Elena held her breath.

She waited.

One second.

Two.

Five.

Nothing.

No sound came from inside.

No movement outside.

Just silence.

Her curiosity won again.

Carefully, she stepped out of her hiding place.

“I’m going to regret this,” she whispered.

Then she followed him inside.

The moment she entered, the temperature dropped.

Instantly.

The air inside felt colder than outside—unnaturally so.

Elena rubbed her arms, looking around.

The building was empty.

Or at least it looked empty.

Broken furniture lay scattered. Dust covered everything. Light barely reached inside.

“Darian?” she called softly.

No answer.

She took another step forward.

The floor creaked loudly beneath her feet.

She froze.

Silence.

Then—

A faint sound.

Footsteps.

Not hers.

Elena turned sharply.

Nothing.

Her heart started beating faster.

“Okay… this is officially creepy,” she whispered.

She moved deeper inside.

“Darian, if you’re trying to scare me, it’s not funny!”

Still no answer.

Then—

A voice.

Low.

Close.

“Elena.”

She spun around immediately.

And there he was.

Darian.

Standing behind her.

Too close.

Her breath caught in her throat.

“I—how did you—” she started, stepping back instinctively.

But there was nowhere to go.

He hadn’t made a sound.

Not one.

“How did you find me?” she asked quickly.

Darian didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at her quietly.

Like he was studying her reaction.

Like she wasn’t supposed to be there… but wasn’t entirely unexpected either.

“You shouldn’t have followed me,” he said finally.

Elena frowned, forcing her fear down. “Then maybe you shouldn’t act so suspicious all the time.”

A pause.

His eyes darkened slightly.

“You don’t understand what this place is.”

Elena glanced around nervously. “It looks like a broken building to me.”

Darian stepped closer.

Elena instinctively stepped back until her back hit a wall.

Her pulse quickened.

He stopped right in front of her.

Close enough that she could feel the strange coldness around him again.

“This place,” he said quietly, “is not abandoned.”

Elena swallowed. “Then what is it?”

Silence.

Long enough to feel uncomfortable.

Then Darian spoke again.

“A boundary.”

Her brows furrowed. “A what?”

But before he could answer—

A sound echoed from deeper inside the building.

Not footsteps this time.

A low, unfamiliar noise.

Like something moving… awake.

Elena froze instantly.

“What was that?” she whispered.

Darian’s expression changed for the first time.

Slightly.

Sharpening.

Warning.

“Stay behind me,” he said firmly.

Elena blinked. “What—”

“Now.”

Something in his tone made her obey without thinking.

She stepped back slowly as Darian turned toward the darkness inside the building.

The air shifted again.

Heavier.

Colder.

And then—

From the shadows deeper inside…

Something moved.

Elena couldn’t see it clearly.

But she felt it.

Like a presence.

Not human.

Not normal.

Darian’s voice dropped lower.

“…So they found this place again.”

Elena’s heart pounded.

“What is that?” she whispered.

Darian didn’t look back.

But his answer came quietly.

“Something you were never meant to see.”

And in that moment—

Elena realized her life had crossed into something far beyond normal school days.

Something dangerous.

Something hidden.

And Darian…

was not just the strange new student anymore.

He was part of it.
