Elena stood frozen by her window, her breath uneven, her heart still pounding from what had just happened.
The wind outside had gone quiet again.
Too quiet.
Darian was still there, but now he wasn’t looking at her anymore. His attention was fixed somewhere beyond the street, into the darkness where the streetlights didn’t reach properly.
“Elena,” he said again, firmer this time. “Move away from the window.”
Something in his voice made her obey without thinking.
She stepped back slowly.
Her hands were shaking.
“…What is happening?” she whispered.
Darian didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, his eyes narrowed slightly, as if he was listening to something she couldn’t hear.
Then he spoke in a low voice.
“They’re tracking movement.”
Elena frowned, fear mixing with confusion. “Who is ‘they’?”
A pause.
Long enough to make the silence feel heavier than his words.
Then—
“Not human,” he replied.
Elena’s stomach tightened. “That’s not an answer!”
Darian finally looked at her directly through the glass.
And for the first time, his expression wasn’t cold.
It was serious.
“Listen carefully,” he said. “You saw something yesterday that you were not supposed to see.”
Elena swallowed. “The building…?”
“Yes.”
Her grip tightened on the edge of her curtain. “What was that place?”
Darian hesitated.
Just for a second.
Then he said,
“A marked zone.”
Elena blinked. “That doesn’t explain anything.”
“It’s not meant to,” he replied.
A sudden gust of wind hit the window again, harder this time. The glass vibrated slightly.
Elena flinched.
Darian turned his head sharply toward the darkness.
His jaw tightened.
“They’re getting closer,” he muttered.
Elena stepped forward again despite her fear. “Darian, you need to tell me what is going on!”
This time, he didn’t dismiss her.
Instead, he said something that made her blood run cold.
“Because of me… you’ve become visible to them.”
Elena’s voice dropped. “Visible to who?”
Darian’s eyes darkened slightly.
“To those who hunt what I am.”
A silence fell between them.
A heavy, suffocating silence.
Elena felt her chest tighten. “What… are you?”
Darian didn’t answer immediately.
For a moment, he looked almost tired.
Like the question carried something he didn’t want to say out loud.
Then—
“I told you,” he said quietly. “I’m not human.”
Elena shook her head slightly. “That’s not enough anymore. I need the truth.”
Darian’s gaze sharpened.
Then he spoke.
“I’m a vampire.”
The words hit the room like a shockwave.
For a second, Elena didn’t respond.
She just stared at him.
Waiting for her brain to reject it.
Laugh.
Deny it.
Call it a joke.
But nothing came.
Only silence.
“…A vampire?” she repeated slowly.
Darian didn’t look away.
“Yes.”
Elena let out a shaky breath, almost a laugh—but it died halfway. “That’s… impossible.”
“It’s real,” he said simply.
Another gust of wind hit the window, stronger than before.
The lights outside flickered for a second.
Elena stepped back again instinctively.
Her voice dropped. “So… what I saw yesterday…”
Darian nodded once.
“The boundary was part of a restriction zone. Something that separates humans from things like me.”
Elena shook her head quickly. “No, no, this is insane. Vampires aren’t—this isn’t real life.”
Darian’s eyes softened slightly, but his voice stayed firm.
“It is real. And right now, you are standing too close to it.”
A faint sound echoed again in the distance.
This time, clearer.
Like footsteps… but not normal ones.
Elena heard it too.
Her breath caught.
“…Do you hear that?” she whispered.
Darian’s expression changed instantly.
“Yes.”
He stepped closer to the window again, scanning the darkness.
Then he spoke sharply.
“Lock your door. Do not come outside.”
Elena grabbed the edge of her hoodie. “Wait—what are you going to do?”
Darian paused.
For a moment, he didn’t answer.
Then he said quietly,
“I’m going to make sure they don’t reach you.”
Before she could respond, he turned away from the window.
“Elena—” she called softly.
He stopped briefly.
Without turning back, he said,
“Stay alive.”
And then he was gone.
Elena rushed to the window again, pulling the curtain aside.
The street was empty.
No sign of him.
No sign of anything.
But the feeling didn’t leave.
Because somewhere in the darkness…
Something else was still there.
Watching.
Waiting.
And Elena finally understood one thing clearly.
Her life wasn’t normal anymore.
And it never would be again.
