That night, Elena couldn’t sleep.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again—the abandoned building, Darian’s warning voice, and that strange feeling in the air like something was alive in the darkness.
But what scared her the most wasn’t what she saw.
It was what she didn’t understand.
She turned in her bed, staring at the ceiling.
“Boundary… what does that even mean?” she whispered to herself.
Her room felt too quiet.
Too still.
Like the silence itself was listening.
Eventually, she gave up on sleep.
Elena sat up, grabbed her hoodie, and walked to the window.
Outside, the night was calm. Streetlights glowed faintly, and the wind moved gently through the trees.
Normal.
Safe-looking.
But her mind wasn’t calm at all.
Something about Darian kept pulling her thoughts back.
Why does it feel like he’s hiding two different lives?
She sighed.
“I need to stop thinking about this,” she muttered.
But even as she said it, she knew it was already too late.
Hours passed.
The house became even quieter.
Everyone was asleep.
Elena should have been too.
But at exactly 12:17 a.m., something made her wake up.
Not a sound.
Not a dream.
Just a feeling.
A pressure in her chest that told her something was wrong.
She sat up slowly.
“…What is this feeling?” she whispered.
Her room was dark, but the moonlight coming through the curtains made faint shapes on the floor.
She stood up and walked toward the window again.
And that was when she saw it.
Outside.
Across the street.
A figure.
Standing still under the dim streetlight.
Elena squinted.
“…Darian?”
Her heart skipped.
It was him.
Standing completely still in the middle of the night.
At first, she thought maybe he was just walking home late.
But something was wrong.
Very wrong.
He wasn’t moving at all.
Not even breathing visibly.
Just standing there like he was waiting.
Watching.
Elena’s instincts screamed at her.
Why is he outside at this time?
Before she could think further, Darian suddenly moved.
Not walking.
Turning.
Slowly.
Directly toward her house.
Elena quickly stepped back from the window.
“No way… no way he saw me,” she whispered.
But then—
A knock.
Her heart stopped.
Not on the door downstairs.
Not on the gate.
On her bedroom window.
Elena froze completely.
Slowly, she turned her head.
Another knock.
Soft.
Controlled.
Her breath hitched.
“…This isn’t funny,” she whispered.
She stepped closer, hesitating.
Then slowly pulled the curtain aside.
Darian was there.
Outside her window.
Standing in the darkness like it was nothing unusual.
Elena’s eyes widened. “What are you doing here?!”
He didn’t react to her panic.
“Open the window,” he said calmly.
“No!” she whispered sharply. “It’s midnight! Why are you even here?!”
Darian looked at her for a moment.
Then said quietly,
“You shouldn’t be awake right now.”
Elena frowned. “That’s not an explanation!”
Another pause.
Then his tone dropped slightly.
“I told you this place isn’t safe at night.”
Elena crossed her arms despite her fear. “So you came to scare me through my window?”
Darian didn’t respond immediately.
Instead, his eyes shifted slightly—like he was scanning the area behind her.
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
“…They’re close,” he murmured.
Elena blinked. “Who is ‘they’?”
Before he could answer—
A strange sound came from somewhere in the distance.
Not from the street.
Not from a car.
Something deeper.
Like movement in the air itself.
Darian’s gaze sharpened instantly.
“Open the window,” he repeated, firmer this time.
Elena hesitated.
Something in his voice made her chest tighten.
“…Why?” she asked quietly.
Darian stepped closer to the window from outside.
And when he spoke again, his voice was lower.
“Because they already know you’re connected to me.”
Elena felt a chill run down her spine.
“What are you talking about?”
But before she could get another answer—
A sudden force of wind hit the window.
The glass rattled violently.
Elena stumbled back in shock.
“What—what was that?!”
Darian’s expression darkened.
“Too late,” he said quietly.
And in that moment—
Something moved in the darkness behind him.
Elena couldn’t see it clearly.
Only a shape.
Fast.
Unnatural.
Darian turned slightly, his voice sharp now.
“Get away from the window.”
Elena’s heart pounded. “Darian, what is going on?!”
But he didn’t answer.
Instead, his eyes briefly changed again.
That same faint red glow she had seen before.
Only this time…
It didn’t disappear quickly.
It lingered.
And for the first time—
Elena realized he wasn’t just warning her.
He was protecting her from something that was already there.
Something she couldn’t see.
But was already very close.
