The Lost Soul

A Novel of Love, Loss, and Eternity

Prologue

The rain fell like forgotten memories upon the city of Nocthollow.

Every streetlamp flickered weakly through the mist, and every passerby walked with hurried feet, unaware that somewhere among them wandered a soul already half dead.

His name was Elias Vale.

He lived like a ghost long before death ever touched him.

People often mistook silence for peace, but Elias knew silence could scream louder than thunder. He carried loneliness the way old churches carried dust — quietly, endlessly, permanently.

There was once a girl who taught him otherwise.

A girl named Seraphine.

And this is the story of how love can survive even when the world does not.

Chapter One

The Boy Who Could Not Feel Spring

Elias first met Seraphine beneath a dying cherry blossom tree.

It was strange because spring had already arrived in Nocthollow, yet that one tree remained pale and barren, its branches empty against the silver sky.

He sat beneath it every evening after work, sketching faces he never finished.

That night, he heard humming.

A soft melody.

Not joyful.

Not sad.

Something in between.

He looked up and saw her standing near the riverbank wearing a white coat too large for her shoulders. Her black hair danced wildly in the cold wind.

“You always draw unfinished eyes,” she said.

Elias frowned. “What?”

She pointed toward his notebook.

“Your drawings. You never finish the eyes.”

No one had ever noticed before.

He closed the notebook slowly.

“Maybe I don’t know what they’re supposed to see.”

The girl smiled faintly.

“Or maybe you’re afraid they’ll see you.”

For the first time in years, Elias felt his heartbeat stumble.
