Lu gave a brief, indifferent nod—his heart not in the moment at all.

“Bro, I’ve got to run—something urgent came up. Good luck,” Kevin said quickly, warm but hurried, before exiting.

Tian stepped inside, radiating bright, eager affection.

“Brother Lu… have you eaten yet?” she asked, her tone soft and sweet, full of fond expectation.

“I have,” Lu replied, offering only a faint, polite smile—one that never reached his eyes.

“Ah, but I made this specially for you—I really want you to try it,” she said, hopeful and proud, holding out the lunchbox like a treasure.

Lu sighed inwardly, reluctant yet too courteous to refuse. “Very well… I’ll have a bite.”

“Wonderful!” Tian beamed, her face lighting up with pure delight.

He lifted the lid and took a small taste—

but the flavor was bland, flat, and utterly forgettable.

It lacked the warmth, the care, the perfect, comforting taste of Zie’s soup—the one he’d had that morning, the one that still lingered in his memory.

A deep frown tugged sharply at his brows. Disappointment settled heavy in his chest.

This is nothing like his.
