* 1 year and 3 months later *
(PoV ZIE)
A whole year has passed—yet nothing has changed. He still treats me like a stranger, as if I never exist. I gave everything to be his wife. I tried so hard to be obedient, to wait up late every night just to welcome him home, to cook his favorite meals before he left and when he returned. But all he ever says is:
“I’m not hungry. Eat it yourself. You don’t have to wait.”
I don’t know what else to do. Did I do something wrong? Why is he so cold to me? His eyes hold no warmth when they look at me—yet the moment my sister is near, he smiles. His whole demeanor shifts, so bright and gentle, nothing like the man I know. The difference cuts deeper than any blade. And now… I find myself burning with jealousy toward my own sister. What does she have that I don’t? I wonder, my heart heavy and hollow.
It’s already so late. Will he even come home tonight? Or will he stay away, just to avoid me?
Suddenly—my phone rings.
[Ring… ring… ring…]
I reach for it with trembling hands. The caller ID glows bright, cruel and clear:
HUSBAND
The phone rings late, the line crackling with loud music and raucous laughter in the background. Lu’s voice is thick, slurred, heavy with whiskey—he’s not even talking directly to me at first, just muttering loud enough for me to hear, as if he’s spilling it all to his buddy beside him.
“You know what, man?” he laughs, bitter and loose, his words dragging. “I messed up. Big time.”
His friend asks something I can’t make out, and Lu snorts, loud and careless—every word like a knife twisted slow.
“Zie… his good, yeah? But his not the one I should’ve married.” He pauses, takes a long gulp, then says it—cold, plain, and shattering. “It was never supposed to be her. I should’ve married her sister instead.
He doesn’t even realize I’m on the line, or if he does, he doesn’t care. He just keeps talking like I’m nothing more than a ghost listening in on his careless confession.
“Yeah… I married the wrong person. And now I’m stuck.”
A roar of laughter bursts from the background. Then the line goes dead—no goodbye, no apology, just silence.
I stand there, phone pressed to my ear, my heart shattering into a thousand quiet pieces. He didn’t say it to hurt me—he just said it because it was the truth he’d been hiding all along. Even drunk, his heart belongs to her. And I… I was just the wrong choice.
(PoV ZIE )
The phone slips from my numb fingers, clattering softly against the cold floor—but I barely hear it.
My chest feels hollow, as if every breath is being torn out of me. The words echo in my head, sharp and unforgiving: I married the wrong person
I look at the table, still set with his favorite dishes—still warm, just like the love I’ve poured into every single day. But warmth means nothing when his heart has turned to ice.
I’m his wife. Yet I am the one left alone in this cold, silent house, while he finds comfort in her arms. My own sister. The person I trusted most.
Tears spill over, hot and endless, tracing paths down my pale cheeks. I press a hand over my mouth to muffle the sob threatening to break free. What did I do wrong? I ask the empty air, my voice barely a whisper. Is my love not enough? Am I not enough?
The silence of the room wraps around me like a shroud. I am here, but I do not exist to him. I am his wife in name only—nothing more than a ghost haunting the home we were supposed to share.
Slowly, I sink to the floor, curling into myself as the pain swallows me whole. I have nothing left to wait for. Nothing left to give.
