VEILBOND 2: THE NINTH GRAVE

VEILBOND 2: THE NINTH GRAVE

*CHAPTER 1: "THE NINTH GRAVE OPENS"*

The first day of college smelled like bleach and new paint.

Kaze Ryuto stood at the gates of Kurogane University and tried to remember why he was afraid of open spaces.

There were too many people. Too much light. Too many exits.

His hands were in his pockets, fingers wrapped around a folded piece of cloth. Dried brown at the edges. He hadn’t washed it in a year.

Behind him, the others arrived in pieces.

Aoi with two bags of groceries because "you boys never eat."

Ren with a laptop under his arm and three phones in his jacket.

Mika talking too loud to cover the shaking in her voice.

Sora with his gym bag, eyes scanning the roof lines.

Yui with a sketchbook clutched to her chest.

Taku checking the exits and counting heads.

Rika last, in sunglasses, with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.

Eight of them.

Eight survivors.

One pact.

"Don’t split up," Kaze said. It came out quiet.

"We won’t," Aoi said, and took his hand for a second. Her fingers were warm.

They walked in together.

The university was wrong.

That was the first thought they all had but didn’t say.

The buildings were new. Glass and steel. But the ground underneath felt old. The grass was too green. The trees were planted in perfect lines, like they were covering something.

Banners hung everywhere.

_WELCOME TO A NEW ERA_

_KUROGANE UNIVERSITY: HEALING THROUGH COMMUNITY_

The old academy crest had been replaced with a dove.

It made Mika laugh. A sharp, ugly sound.

"They put a bird on it," she said. "Like that fixes anything."

Ren was already scanning. "Cameras every ten meters. New ones. Facial recognition."

"Paranoid," Rika said.

"Alive," Ren said back.

They reached the central plaza.

A fountain in the middle. Clear water. No one in it yet.

A stage had been set up. Chairs in rows. Thousands of freshmen and transfer students sitting, phones out, bored.

And at the podium, a man in a black suit.

Headmaster Kuronagi Kurogane.

He was younger than his brother. Maybe late twenties. Hair neat. Smile wide. When he spoke, his voice carried without a microphone.

"Welcome," he said. "Welcome to Kurogane University. Welcome to the start of something new."

Kaze felt it before he heard it.

A cold spot behind his eyes. The way the air got thin before a storm.

His vision blurred.

_Death Echo._

He was standing in the same plaza. But it was night.

The fountain was red.

A body floated in it. A girl. Freshman uniform. Hair spread out like ink.

And standing over her, a shadow with a cane.

Kaze gasped and staggered.

Aoi caught him. "Kaze?"

"Don’t," he whispered. "Don’t go near the fountain."

Kuronagi’s speech continued, smooth and warm.

"We know what you’ve been through. We know the rumors, the stories. I’m here to tell you they end today. This university is a place of healing. A place of second chances. No more fear. No more sacrifice."

He smiled.

And for a second, Kaze swore the black lines under his eyes got darker.

The speech ended in applause. Students stood, stretched, took pictures.

The 8 stayed sitting.

"Did you see anything?" Sora asked Kaze.

"A girl," Kaze said. "In the fountain. Tonight."

"Which girl?" Yui asked, already opening her sketchbook.

"I don’t know her," Kaze said. "But she’s here."

Ren pulled out his phone. "I’ll check the freshman list. Cross-reference—"

He stopped.

On the other side of the plaza, a girl was taking a selfie with the fountain behind her.

Brown hair. Nervous smile. First year badge.

She looked exactly like the body in Kaze’s vision.

"Aoi," Kaze said. "Her. Don’t let her near the water."

Aoi was already moving.

They didn’t make it in time.

It happened fast. Too fast.

The girl laughed with her friends. Turned to get closer to the fountain for a better picture.

Slipped.

No one pushed her.

But her head hit the edge.

And she fell in.

Screams.

People running.

Sora was in the water in three seconds, pulling her out.

But her eyes were already open.

And empty.

Aoi was shaking. "I tried— I was—"

"It’s not your fault," Kaze said. But his voice was hollow.

Because in his vision, no one had tried.

Campus security came.

Ambulance.

Headmaster Kuronagi was there in under a minute, face pale, hands shaking. Perfect grief.

"This is a tragedy," he said to the crowd. "We will investigate. We will heal. Please, go to your classes. Don’t let fear win."

He looked right at Kaze when he said "fear."

And smiled. Just for a second.

By night, the story was everywhere.

"Accident."

"Slippery edge."

"Tragic."

The 8 met in Dorm East Wing, Floor 9.

The floor that wasn’t on the map.

Their rooms were together. Intentionally.

Pact of Eight.

No one spoke for a long time.

Then Ren threw his laptop on the table.

"There’s a mark," he said. "On the fountain CCTV. For three frames. Right before she fell."

He turned the screen.

Static.

And in the static, a symbol. A circle with nine lines coming out of it.

"Veil Mark," Taku said quietly. "The curse."

"It followed us," Mika whispered.

Yui was drawing. Fast, frantic lines.

When she turned the sketchbook, they all went still.

It was the fountain.

And around it, eight figures standing.

And a ninth grave, open, in the middle.

"I didn’t mean to draw this," Yui said. "It just came out."

Kaze stood. "We need to leave. Tonight. All of us."

"And go where?" Rika said. "It’s in the city now, Kaze. Ren said it. The mark was in the CCTV feed. It’s not just here anymore."

"Then we fight," Sora said.

"With what?" Aoi asked. "We barely survived last time."

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

And on the table, in the middle of them, a book appeared.

Old. Leather. Stitched with black thread.

It hadn’t been there a second ago.

The Veil Book.

It opened on its own.

The pages were blank.

Then words wrote themselves. Slow. Like a hand was dragging a quill.

_ORIENTATION COMPLETE._

_THE FIRST HAS BEEN GIVEN._

_EIGHT REMAIN._

_NINE ARE REQUIRED._

The ink looked wet.

It smelled like copper.

"The Ninth Grave," Taku said. "It’s starting."

"We have to destroy it," Mika said.

"You can’t," a voice said from the doorway.

Headmaster Kuronagi stood there.

No knock.

Suit still perfect.

But his eyes were tired.

"I tried," he said. "After my brother died, I tried to burn it. To bury it. To drown it. It always comes back."

He stepped in. Closed the door.

"You think I want this? Eight of you, walking around with his blood on your hands. Do you know what he did to keep this alive? Do you know what it cost him?"

"He killed people," Kaze said.

"Yes," Kuronagi said. "And now it wants you to finish the job."

He walked to the table. Didn’t touch the book.

"The curse isn’t bound to this place anymore. It’s bound to you. To your guilt. To your pact. Every time you use whatever you got from it, you feed it."

"So what do you want?" Sora asked, hand on his bokken.

"I want to end it," Kuronagi said. "Properly. One last sacrifice. Willing. And it’s over. No more names. No more graves."

"Who?" Aoi asked.

Kuronagi looked at Kaze.

"You."

Silence.

"That’s not happening," Ren said.

"It has to be willing," Kuronagi said. "That’s the rule. I can’t force you. But if you don’t, it will pick for you. And it won’t be clean. It will take your families. Your friends. One by one, until you break and offer yourself anyway."

"Why should we believe you?" Rika asked.

"Because I’m the only one who’s read the whole book," Kuronagi said. "And because in three days, it’s a new moon. The night the Ninth Grave opens. After that, there’s no stopping it."

He turned to leave.

"Think about it, Kaze. You were willing to kill once to save people. Be willing again."

The door closed.

No one moved.

Finally, Kaze picked up the cloth from his pocket. Unfolded it.

The dried blood was darker in the lamplight.

"Last time I chose to kill," he said. "This time... they want me to choose to die."

"Don’t," Aoi said.

"I don’t know," Kaze said.

That night, Kaze didn’t sleep.

He sat by the window. Watching the campus.

The fountain had been cleaned. No trace of the girl.

But in the water, for a second, he saw her face looking back.

His phone buzzed.

Group chat. "Pact of Eight."

Ren: `CCTV caught someone near the archives at 3am. Not security.`

Mika: `I can’t sleep. I keep hearing laughing.`

Sora: `My scar is bleeding again.`

Yui: `I drew something else. I’ll show you tomorrow.`

Taku: `Salt lines are down. Something was here.`

Rika: `...`

Aoi: `Kaze? Are you okay?`

Kaze didn’t answer.

He looked at his hands.

No blood.

Not yet.

At three in the morning, he heard it.

Footsteps in the hall.

Soft.

Stopping outside their door.

He didn’t move.

The doorknob didn’t turn.

But something slid under the door.

Paper.

Kaze picked it up.

Black paper.

Folded once.

Inside, in red ink:

_A name._

He didn’t recognize it.

A freshman. Boy.

And under the name, a time.

Tonight.

Kaze stood.

Woke the others.

They ran.

They didn’t make it.

They found him in the Veil Archives.

Hanging.

From the pipes.

Tongue out.

And carved into the concrete floor around him, the same circle. Nine lines.

And standing in the corner, watching, Headmaster Kuronagi.

He wasn’t smiling.

He looked sad.

"Second," he said quietly. "You have ten days until the new moon, Kaze. After that, I can’t help you."

He walked past them.

Paused by Kaze.

"You’re dreaming of them, aren’t you? The ones who will die. That’s how it starts. It shows you so you’ll think you can stop it. So you’ll try. So you’ll use your power. So you’ll feed it."

He left.

The 8 stood in the blood.

On the way back, no one talked.

In their room, the Veil Book was still open.

A new page.

A new name.

Not one of them.

A name they didn’t know.

"Who is that?" Mika asked.

"Someone we know," Kaze said. "It always is."

He looked at his hands again.

They were shaking.

"Eight survived," he said quietly.

"Nine are required."

Outside, the moon was already starting to disappear.

Ten days left.

And somewhere in the university, the Ninth Grave was waiting to be filled.

The book turned its own page.
