Ren was gone.
His bed was still made. His laptop was still warm. The salt line at his door was broken, like someone had stepped over it in a hurry.
The Veil Book sat on the table. Open.
Where his name used to be, there was only ash.
*DEPARTED. DEBT UNPAID.*
Day 3.
Eight days until the new moon.
No one slept.
Aoi kept checking her phone.
Sora kept sharpening his bokken until the edge sang.
Mika kept talking, because if she stopped, the quiet would eat her.
Yui kept drawing circles.
Taku kept erasing them.
Rika kept staring at the door.
Kaze kept watching the book.
At dawn, the book moved.
A new page.
A new name.
A name none of them knew.
*Hana Ito.*
Under it, an address.
Off campus.
A bus stop.
"Who is she?" Aoi asked.
"I don’t know," Kaze said.
"Then why her?" Mika said.
"Because we know someone who knows her," Rika said quietly.
Everyone looked at her.
Rika wouldn’t meet their eyes. "My cousin. She goes to the community college. She mentioned a Hana once. Said she was nice. Quiet."
"You didn’t say you had family here," Sora said.
"I didn’t say a lot of things," Rika said.
Kaze stood. "We go."
They moved as seven now.
The city felt different without Ren.
Emptier.
Like the static had more room to breathe.
The bus stop was on a corner with a broken light.
No one was there.
Just a backpack on the bench.
Pink.
With a keychain of a cat.
Yui picked it up. "It’s warm."
Taku knelt. Salt. A faint circle under the bench.
"She was here," he said. "Recently."
Mika was looking down the street. "Car."
Black.
Tinted.
Idling across from them.
When Mika looked, it drove away.
They split up to search.
That was the first mistake.
Kaze, Aoi, and Sora went left.
Yui, Taku, and Mika went right.
Rika said she’d check the cameras at the corner store.
Ten minutes later, Mika screamed.
They found her in an alley.
On her knees.
Shaking.
And in front of her, painted on the brick wall in something dark.
The nine-line circle.
And inside it, a name.
*HANA.*
Fresh.
Still wet.
"She was here," Mika whispered. "I heard her. She was crying. Then the lights went out and— and she was gone."
"Did you see who took her?" Sora asked.
Mika shook her head. "Static. Like Ren said. It was in my ears."
Kaze touched the wall. The paint, or whatever it was, burned his fingers.
"She’s not dead," he said. "Not yet. The book would’ve written it."
Aoi was on the phone with Rika. "Where are you?"
Rika’s voice was shaking. "I’m at the store. The cameras. They’re all— there’s static. And there’s a man. In a suit. He’s been standing there for an hour. Not moving. Just watching the door."
"Description?"
"Black suit. Silver cane. He’s looking right at me."
Kuronagi.
"Get out of there," Kaze said.
"I can’t," Rika said. "The door won’t open."
The line went dead.
They ran.
The corner store was dark.
Closed sign on the door.
But through the glass, they could see Rika inside.
Banging on the door.
And across from her, standing perfectly still, Headmaster Kuronagi.
He looked at Kaze through the glass.
Smiled.
And tapped his cane once.
The lights inside flickered.
And Rika disappeared.
The door unlocked.
They ran in.
Empty.
No Rika.
No Kuronagi.
Just the security monitor.
Static.
And in the static, for one frame, Rika’s face.
Eyes wide.
Mouth open like she was screaming.
Then nothing.
"She’s not on the cameras anymore," Ren’s voice came from behind them.
They all turned.
Ren.
Standing in the aisle.
Pale.
Holding his laptop.
"You came back," Aoi said.
"I had to," Ren said. "I heard her. In the static. She was calling my name."
"Where is she?" Kaze asked.
Ren pointed at the ceiling. "Up. The roof. There’s a room up there that’s not on the blueprints."
They took the stairs.
The air got colder with each floor.
The static got louder.
The roof door was open.
Inside: a small room.
No windows.
One chair.
One table.
And on the table, the Veil Book.
Open.
And sitting in the chair, Rika.
Unconscious.
And across from her, Headmaster Kuronagi.
Reading.
He didn’t look up when they came in.
"Close the door," he said. "You’re letting the cold in."
No one moved.
Kuronagi sighed and closed the book himself.
"She’s fine," he said. "For now. I just needed to talk to her. Alone."
"What did you do to her?" Sora asked, hand on his bokken.
"Nothing," Kuronagi said. "I asked her questions. About her family. About her connection to the Kurogane line. Did you know her grandmother worked for us? Before the academy?"
Rika’s eyes opened.
She looked scared.
"Don’t," she whispered.
"Don’t what?" Kuronagi asked, gentle. "Don’t tell them you made a deal? Don’t tell them you gave me a name?"
The room went still.
"What?" Mika said.
Rika was crying now. "I’m sorry. I’m sorry. He said if I gave him one name, he’d leave the rest of us alone. He said it would be someone we didn’t know. So I— I gave him Hana. I didn’t think—"
Kaze felt like the floor dropped out.
"You," he said.
"I didn’t know it would be her!" Rika sobbed. "I thought— I thought if it was a stranger—"
"It’s always someone we know," Kaze said quietly. "It always is."
Kuronagi stood. "Thank you, Rika. You did what you had to. Now the debt is paid. For now."
He walked to the door.
Paused.
"The girl, Hana, is in the Old Chapel. In the basement. She’s alive. But the ritual starts at midnight. If you want her, come get her. Alone, Kaze. If you bring them, she dies."
He left.
The door closed.
The static stopped.
Rika was shaking. "I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t—"
Sora grabbed her arm. "Where is she? The chapel?"
"Yes," Rika said. "He showed me. In my head. The basement. The trapdoor."
Kaze looked at the book.
Hana’s name was written on the page.
Under it, a time.
*11:59 PM.*
"Tonight," Aoi said.
"We have to go," Sora said.
"No," Kaze said. "He said alone."
"Then we don’t listen," Mika said.
"If we don’t, Hana dies," Kaze said.
"And if you go alone, you die," Aoi said.
Kaze looked at them.
His friends.
Seven now.
Because of him.
Because of Rika.
Because of the curse.
"I’ll go," he said.
"No," they all said.
"I have to," Kaze said. "If I don’t, it takes her. And then it takes someone else. And it never stops."
He picked up the book.
It was lighter than before.
Or maybe he was heavier.
"I’ll be back before midnight," he said.
"And if you’re not?" Taku asked.
"Then don’t follow me," Kaze said.
He left.
No one stopped him.
The Old Chapel at night was worse than in the day.
No lights.
The windows were black.
The door was open.
Kaze went in.
His footsteps echoed.
The air smelled like dust and iron.
"Hello?" he called.
No answer.
He walked to the altar.
The trapdoor was open.
Stairs going down.
He went down.
The basement was a room.
Stone walls.
One light bulb.
And in the center, a circle.
Salt.
Nine lines.
And in the middle, Hana.
Tied.
Unconscious.
Breathing.
And standing over her, Headmaster Kuronagi.
No cane.
Just the Veil Book in his hands.
"You came," Kuronagi said.
"Let her go," Kaze said.
"I can’t," Kuronagi said. "The ritual’s started. If I stop now, it takes me instead."
"Then stop it," Kaze said.
"I can’t," Kuronagi said again. "Unless you take her place. Willingly."
Kaze looked at Hana.
She looked like the girl from his vision.
Young.
Scared.
Innocent.
"I’m not willing," Kaze said.
"I know," Kuronagi said. "That’s why it’s going to hurt."
He opened the book.
Started to read.
The air got cold.
The salt began to glow.
Hana stirred.
Kaze moved.
He didn’t think.
He just moved.
He grabbed Hana.
Pulled her out of the circle.
The light flared.
A sound.
Like glass breaking.
Like screaming.
Kuronagi fell back.
The book flew from his hands.
Landed open.
New words.
Fast.
Angry.
_THE ANCHOR INTERFERED._
_THE DEBT DOUBLES._
_TWO FOR ONE._
Kaze picked up Hana.
She was awake now.
Crying.
"Please," she whispered. "Please don’t let me die."
"I won’t," Kaze said.
He ran.
Up the stairs.
Out of the chapel.
Into the night.
Behind him, the chapel doors slammed shut.
And from inside, Kuronagi’s voice.
Not angry.
Tired.
"Run, Kaze. Run while you can. Because now it wants two."
Kaze didn’t stop running until he reached the dorm.
The others were waiting.
They saw Hana.
They saw Kaze’s face.
"What happened?" Aoi asked.
"It doubled," Kaze said. "It wants two now. Because I interfered."
He set Hana down.
She was shaking.
Aoi wrapped her in a blanket.
The Veil Book was on the table.
Open.
Two new names.
*AOI SHIMIZU.*
*SORA KITANO.*
"No," Mika whispered.
"The cost," Taku said. "For interfering."
Kaze nodded. "It’s my fault."
Aoi looked at the book.
Then at Kaze.
"Then we don’t let it happen," she said.
"How?" Kaze asked.
"We fight," Sora said. "Together. Like we said we would."
The lights flickered.
On the book, new words.
_MIDNIGHT._
_THE GRAVE OPENS._
_CHOOSE._
It was eleven.
One hour.
Kaze looked at Hana.
At Aoi.
At Sora.
At all of them.
"I won’t let it take you," he said.
"Then what?" Ren asked. He was still here. Still shaking.
"I don’t know," Kaze said. "But I’m not giving it anyone."
The clock ticked.
Eleven ten.
Eleven twenty.
Eleven thirty.
Yui was drawing.
Fast.
When she finished, she showed them.
It was the chapel.
The circle.
And Kaze, standing in the middle.
Alone.
With a knife in his hand.
"I didn’t want to draw this," Yui said.
"I know," Kaze said.
Eleven forty.
Eleven fifty.
Eleven fifty-five.
The book flipped pages.
Fast.
Like it was excited.
_TIME._
_THE GRAVE AWAITS._
Kaze stood.
"I’m going back," he said.
"We’re coming with you," Sora said.
"No," Kaze said. "If I go with you, they die. If I go alone, maybe I can stop it."
He looked at Aoi.
"Take care of them."
"Kaze—"
"I’ll be back," he said.
He walked out.
Alone.
The chapel was dark.
The trapdoor was open.
Light coming from below.
Kaze went down.
Kuronagi was there.
Sitting in the circle.
Alone.
The book in front of him.
"You came," he said.
"Let them go," Kaze said.
"I can’t," Kuronagi said. "But you can stop it."
"How?"
"By choosing," Kuronagi said. "Someone. Anyone. Say the name. And the ritual ends. Two lives for two lives. Fair."
Kaze looked at the circle.
Empty now.
Hana was safe.
For now.
"And if I don’t?"
"Then it takes them anyway," Kuronagi said. "And it takes you too. Because you interfered."
Kaze thought of the 7 upstairs.
Of Hana.
Of Ren, hiding somewhere.
Of all the names in the book.
He thought of his hands.
Still dirty.
Still bleeding, even though there was no blood.
"I choose," Kaze said.
Kuronagi leaned forward. "Who?"
"Myself," Kaze said.
The room went silent.
The book stopped turning.
Kuronagi stared. "You can’t. It has to be willing. And it has to be someone else. That’s the rule."
"Then change the rule," Kaze said.
"I can’t—"
"Then I will," Kaze said.
He stepped into the circle.
The salt burned his feet.
He didn’t care.
He picked up the book.
It was heavy.
Hot.
He opened it.
Found a blank page.
And with his finger, he wrote.
*KAZE RYUTO.*
The ink smoked.
The room shook.
Kuronagi was yelling something.
Kaze kept writing.
Under his name:
_I OFFER MYSELF. IN PLACE OF ALL OF THEM. END IT._
The light was blinding.
The screaming was everywhere.
Not his.
Not Kuronagi’s.
Something else.
Then nothing.
Darkness.
Kaze opened his eyes.
He was lying on the floor.
The circle was gone.
The salt was gone.
The book was closed.
And on the cover, a new mark.
His name.
Kuronagi was on his knees.
Staring at him.
"You idiot," he whispered. "It won’t accept you. You’re not willing. You’re guilty. There’s a difference."
Kaze coughed.
"I don’t care," he said.
Footsteps.
Above.
Running.
The others.
They’d followed him anyway.
They burst in.
Saw Kaze on the floor.
Saw the book.
Saw Kuronagi.
"What did you do?" Aoi asked, running to him.
"I tried," Kaze said.
The book moved.
Opened.
Blank pages.
All of them.
No names.
For a second, hope.
Then new words.
Slow.
Final.
_OFFER REJECTED._
_THE DEBT REMAINS._
_DAY 4._
_SEVEN REMAIN._
The lights went out.
When they came back on, Kuronagi was gone.
The book was gone.
And on the floor, carved into the stone, a new circle.
Bigger.
With nine lines.
And in the center, a name.
Not written in ink.
Carved.
*KAZE RYUTO.*
Kaze stared at it.
His name.
In the grave.
Aoi held his hand.
"I’m not letting you go," she said.
"I know," Kaze said.
Above them, the clock struck midnight.
Day 4 had begun.
And somewhere, the curse was laughing.
