The name in the stone wouldn’t wash off.
Kaze had tried. Salt, water, bleach, his own blood.
*KAZE RYUTO.*
Carved into the floor of the Old Chapel basement.
Still there at dawn.
Day 4.
Seven days until the new moon.
Seven of them left.
Ren was missing.
Hana was asleep in the dorm with Aoi watching her.
And the Veil Book was gone.
They tore the chapel apart looking for it.
Nothing.
No book.
No Kuronagi.
Just the circle.
And the name.
Back at Dorm East Wing Floor 9, no one spoke.
The "Pact of Eight" group chat had one new message from Ren at 4am.
`don’t follow me`
Then nothing.
Mika was the first to break.
She threw a chair across the room.
"So what now? We just wait to die?"
"No," Sora said. "We hunt it."
"With what?" Taku asked. "The book’s gone. Kuronagi’s gone. Ren’s gone. We have nothing."
"We have each other," Aoi said.
"That’s what it wants," Yui whispered. "Us. Together."
The lights flickered.
On the wall, written in dust.
*SEVEN.*
"Stop," Kaze said. His voice was rough. He hadn’t slept.
"Stop what?" Mika snapped.
"Stop panicking. It wants us to panic. It wants us to turn on each other."
"And what if we do?" Rika said quietly. "What if that’s the only way to survive?"
Everyone looked at her.
She flinched. "What? I made a deal once. I can do it again."
"No," Kaze said. "You’re not trading anyone else."
"Then what do we do?" Rika asked. "Huh? What’s the plan, Anchor?"
Kaze didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t have one.
At noon, the power came back on.
And with it, a package at the door.
No address.
No postage.
Just their floor number.
Inside: a phone.
Old.
And a note.
Black paper.
Red ink.
_CALL ME._
_-K_
Kuronagi.
Kaze picked up the phone.
It rang once.
"Hello?"
"Day 4," Kuronagi said. His voice was tired. "You look tired too."
"Where’s the book?" Kaze asked.
"Safe," Kuronagi said. "Safer than with you. You tried to use it as a weapon. It doesn’t work that way."
"Where’s Ren?"
"Running," Kuronagi said. "Smart boy. But it will find him. It always does."
"What do you want?"
"I want to make you a deal," Kuronagi said. "The real one. Not the one I offered before."
"I’m not listening."
"You will," Kuronagi said. "Because tonight, one of you dies. Unless you give me something in return."
"Who?"
"I don’t know," Kuronagi said. "The book picks. But I can delay it. For 24 hours. If you come to me. Alone."
"Why should I trust you?"
"You shouldn’t," Kuronagi said. "But you’re out of options, Kaze. Meet me. Midnight. The Veil Archives. Come alone, or I let it take whoever it wants."
The line went dead.
Kaze told them.
"No," Sora said immediately.
"It’s a trap," Taku said.
"It’s our only shot," Kaze said.
"Then we all go," Mika said.
"He said alone," Kaze said.
"Since when do we listen to him?" Aoi asked.
"Since he’s the only one who knows how this works," Kaze said.
He left at 11:30.
No one followed him.
Not because they agreed.
Because he asked them not to.
The Veil Archives were colder than before.
The door was open.
Kuronagi was inside.
Sitting at the table.
The Veil Book in front of him.
Closed.
"You came," he said.
"You said you could delay it," Kaze said.
"I can," Kuronagi said. "But it costs."
"What?"
"A name," Kuronagi said. "Not one of yours. Someone else. Someone the curse doesn’t know yet."
"That’s not a delay," Kaze said. "That’s feeding it."
"Yes," Kuronagi said. "That’s how this works. You feed it, it sleeps. You starve it, it eats you."
Kaze stared at him. "You’re insane."
"Probably," Kuronagi said. "My brother was too. Difference is, he pretended he wasn’t."
He opened the book.
Blank pages.
"See? It’s hungry. It hasn’t eaten since you pulled the girl out. It’s angry."
"Then let it be angry," Kaze said.
Kuronagi sighed. "You don’t get it. This isn’t about you. It’s about the deal my family made. A hundred years ago. Eight lives every decade, or the whole bloodline dies. My brother tried to cheat it. He died. I’m trying to end it. The only way to end it is to finish it. One last cycle. Nine deaths. One willing."
"And you think that’s me."
"I know it’s you," Kuronagi said. "The book told me. The night you were born."
Kaze went still.
"What?"
"Your mother worked for us," Kuronagi said. "Before you were born. She made a deal to save your life. When you were sick. As a baby. Eight lives, in exchange for yours. You’ve been marked since day one, Kaze. That’s why it wants you. That’s why the visions started with you. You’re not the Anchor. You’re the payment."
The room tilted.
Kaze grabbed the table.
"That’s a lie."
"Is it?" Kuronagi asked. "Then why did it carve your name in the stone? Why does it show you the deaths first? Why does it hurt you the most when you try to save people?"
Kaze couldn’t breathe.
"Leave," he whispered.
"I’m trying to help you," Kuronagi said.
"LEAVE!" Kaze shouted.
Kuronagi stood.
Picked up the book.
"Midnight, Kaze. If you don’t give me a name, it picks one of yours. And this time, it won’t be Ren. It’ll be closer."
He left.
The door closed.
Kaze was alone.
With the truth.
He didn’t go back to the dorm.
He couldn’t.
He walked.
Through campus.
Through the city.
Until his feet hurt and his head was empty.
At 2am, his phone buzzed.
Aoi.
`Where are you?`
`Are you okay?`
`Please answer.`
He didn’t.
At 3am, another buzz.
Unknown number.
A video.
15 seconds.
Ren.
In a room.
Tied to a chair.
Eyes open.
Mouth gagged.
And behind him, a shadow.
With a cane.
The video ended.
A text followed.
_LAST CHANCE. GIVE ME A NAME._
Kaze called the number.
Kuronagi answered.
"Where is he?"
"Does it matter?" Kuronagi said. "You have until dawn. Then I give him to it."
"Don’t—"
"Give. Me. A. Name."
Kaze closed his eyes.
"I can’t."
"Then he dies," Kuronagi said. "And the next one. And the next."
The line cut.
Kaze ran.
Back to the dorm.
They were all awake.
Waiting.
"What happened?" Aoi asked.
"Ren," Kaze said. "He has Ren. He wants a name or he gives him to it."
"We can’t," Mika said.
"We have to," Sora said. "He’s one of us."
"And if we do, it never stops," Taku said. "Don’t you see? It’s a loop."
"Then what?" Rika asked. "We let Ren die?"
No one answered.
At 5am, the lights went out.
Not just their floor.
The whole dorm.
And in the dark, a sound.
Footsteps.
In the hall.
Stopping at their door.
A knock.
Three times.
Slow.
No one moved.
The doorknob turned.
The door opened.
Headmaster Kuronagi stood there.
No book.
No cane.
Just him.
"Morning," he said. "Dawn. Time’s up."
He stepped aside.
Two men dragged Ren in.
Tied.
Gagged.
Eyes wild.
Kuronagi closed the door.
"Last chance, Kaze. One name. Anyone. And I let him go."
"And if I don’t?" Kaze asked.
"Then I leave," Kuronagi said. "And it takes him. Here. In front of you. So you remember what happens when you say no."
The room was silent.
Ren was shaking his head.
Muffled sounds behind the gag.
Kaze looked at them.
His friends.
Terrified.
Waiting for him to choose.
He stepped forward.
"Me," he said. "Take me."
Kuronagi tilted his head. "You’re not listening. It has to be someone else."
"Then take me anyway," Kaze said. "And see what happens."
Kuronagi smiled. "Bold. Stupid. But bold."
He snapped his fingers.
The men let go of Ren.
Ren fell to the floor, gasping.
"Run," Kuronagi said to Ren.
Ren didn’t.
He crawled to Kaze.
"Don’t," he whispered.
Kuronagi walked to the door.
Paused.
"You had your chance," he said.
"Next time, I don’t ask."
He left.
The men followed.
The door closed.
For a minute, no one moved.
Then Aoi was on her knees, checking Ren.
"You’re okay," she said. "You’re okay."
Ren was crying.
"I heard it," he said. "In my head. It said my name. Over and over."
Kaze sat down.
His hands were shaking.
"I’m sorry," he said.
"For what?" Sora asked.
"For all of this," Kaze said. "It’s because of me. My mother. The deal. I’m the reason it started."
He told them.
Everything Kuronagi said.
The deal.
The bloodline.
The payment.
No one spoke for a long time.
Then Yui did.
"Then we break the deal," she said.
"How?" Taku asked.
"We find out what the real deal was," Yui said. "Not what Kuronagi told us. The truth. In the Archives. In the old records. There has to be something."
"And if there isn’t?" Mika asked.
"Then we make a new one," Yui said.
Kaze looked at her.
"You’re not thinking of—"
"I’m thinking of us," Yui said. "All of us. Not just you."
The book was still missing.
But on the table, a new piece of paper had appeared.
Black.
Folded.
Kaze opened it.
Inside, one line.
_THE ARCHIVES. MIDNIGHT. BRING THE SEVEN._
No signature.
But they knew who it was from.
"We’re not going," Sora said.
"We have to," Kaze said. "If there’s a way to break this, it’s there."
"And if it’s a trap?" Rika asked.
"Then we spring it," Kaze said.
They agreed.
Reluctantly.
Night came fast.
They went as seven.
To the Veil Archives.
The door was open.
Lights on.
Inside, Kuronagi was waiting.
And with him, the Veil Book.
Open.
On the table, spread out.
Old documents.
Photos.
A contract.
Yellowed.
Signed in blood.
"The original deal," Kuronagi said. "1812. My ancestor. A plague. He traded eight lives every ten years for the Kurogane line to survive."
"And my mother?" Kaze asked.
"Addendum," Kuronagi said. "1950. Your mother. She begged. He added you. One life, in exchange for eight later. You."
Kaze looked at the paper.
His mother’s signature.
Shaky.
"So break it," Kaze said.
"I can’t," Kuronagi said. "Only the one who made it can. Or the one it was made for."
"That’s you," Kaze said.
"No," Kuronagi said. "It’s you. You’re the payment. You have to refuse it."
"How?"
"By dying willingly," Kuronagi said. "Or by making it take someone else. And breaking the cycle that way."
Kaze laughed. A bitter sound.
"Those are the same thing."
"Yes," Kuronagi said. "That’s the point."
The lights flickered.
The book slammed shut.
On its own.
A voice.
Not Kuronagi’s.
Older.
From the walls.
_ENOUGH TALK._
The temperature dropped.
Frost on the windows.
The contract on the table began to burn.
From the edges in.
Kuronagi grabbed it.
Tried to put it out.
It burned his hands.
He dropped it.
The ashes formed words in the air.
*THE SEVENTH MUST FALL.*
"Seven," Mika whispered. "There’s seven of us."
The ashes moved.
Formed another word.
*CHOOSE.*
"No," Kaze said.
The voice laughed.
_THEN I CHOOSE._
The lights went out.
In the dark, screaming.
A chair falling.
A body hitting the floor.
When the lights came back,
Mika was on the ground.
Not moving.
Eyes open.
And around her neck, a thin red line.
Like a cut.
But there was no blood.
She was gone.
The book was open again.
A new name.
*MIKA TORU.*
Crossed out.
The others were screaming.
Kaze couldn’t hear them.
He was looking at Mika.
At her face.
Peaceful.
Like she was sleeping.
Kuronagi was on his knees.
"Seven," he whispered. "It took the seventh."
"Get out," Kaze said. His voice was flat.
"Kaze—"
"GET OUT!"
Kuronagi left.
With the book.
With the ashes.
The 6 of them stayed.
With Mika.
No one cried.
Not yet.
Kaze picked up Mika’s hand.
It was still warm.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"She joked about it," Aoi said. "Remember? 'If we die, let’s laugh first.'"
Kaze nodded.
He couldn’t speak.
They carried her back to the dorm.
Laid her on her bed.
Covered her with a blanket.
No one slept.
They sat around her.
All night.
At dawn, the Veil Book appeared again.
On the table.
Open.
A new page.
_SIX REMAIN._
_SIX DAYS._
_NEXT: THE BLADE._
Sora stared at it.
"I’m next," he said.
"No," Kaze said.
"Yes," Sora said. "It said the blade. That’s me."
"We won’t let it," Aoi said.
"How?" Sora asked. "We couldn’t save Mika. We couldn’t save Ren. We can’t save anyone."
"Then we stop trying to save people," Kaze said. "And we start killing it."
Everyone looked at him.
"What?" Taku asked.
"We kill Kuronagi," Kaze said. "We burn the book. We burn the chapel. We end it."
"That’s what your brother tried," Rika said quietly.
"And he failed," Kaze said. "Because he did it alone. We’re not alone."
He stood.
"The next 24 hours, we don’t split up. We don’t sleep. We don’t use our powers unless we have to. And at midnight tomorrow, we go to the chapel. All of us. And we end this."
No one argued.
That night, they stayed together.
In one room.
Lights on.
Weapons ready.
At 11:59, the book flipped.
A new page.
Blank.
For a second, relief.
Then the door opened.
Headmaster Kuronagi.
Alone.
No book.
No cane.
Just a knife in his hand.
"Last night," he said. "You chose. Now I choose."
He looked at Sora.
"The blade."
Sora stood.
Pulled out his bokken.
"Come and get me."
Kuronagi smiled.
"Gladly."
He lunged.
And the lights went out.
