*CHAPTER 5: "THE FEATHER AND THE CONTRACT"*

The feather didn’t burn.

Taku tried.

Salt, fire, copper wire.

The black feather just sat in the bowl and watched the flames go out around it.

"It’s not from a bird," Ren said. "The structure’s wrong. It’s too heavy. Like it’s made of something else."

"Like what?" Mika would’ve asked.

No one answered.

Day 6.

Five days until the new moon.

Six people left.

One paused curse.

They put the feather in a jar.

Put the jar in the box.

Put the box under salt.

It didn’t help.

The Veil Book was quiet.

Too quiet.

No new names.

No new pages.

Just the broken circle on the cover, like a scar.

Kaze hadn’t had a vision in 48 hours.

He should’ve felt relieved.

He didn’t.

It felt like the calm before the thing that kills you.

"We need to find Kuronagi," Kaze said at breakfast. No one was eating.

"He left the book," Sora said. "That means he’s done."

"That means he’s hiding," Ren said. "And he knows where it will hit next."

"Then we make him talk," Rika said.

Aoi looked at Kaze. "Where do we start?"

"The chapel," Kaze said. "He was there. He has to have something there."

They went at 10am.

Sun high.

Campus empty.

Finals week.

The Old Chapel was locked.

This time for real.

Chains.

Padlock.

A sign: _UNDER RENOVATION. DO NOT ENTER._

Ren picked it.

The door opened.

Inside: different.

The candles were gone.

The pews were gone.

The altar was gone.

Just dust and the trapdoor.

Open.

"Did we leave it open?" Yui asked.

"No," Kaze said.

They went down.

The basement was clean.

Too clean.

The salt circle was scrubbed off.

The stone was new.

And on the wall, a door.

Metal.

With a keypad.

"That wasn’t here," Taku said.

Kuronagi had been busy.

Ren got to work.

Laptop out.

Wires.

"Give me five minutes," he said.

They waited.

The air was cold.

Hana stayed close to Aoi.

The door beeped.

Green.

It opened.

Inside: an office.

Small.

No windows.

Desk.

Chair.

And on the wall, photos.

Dozens of them.

Of the 8.

From last year.

In class.

In the halls.

Sleeping.

And new ones.

Of them now.

At the dorm.

At the Archives.

At Mika’s grave.

"He’s been watching us," Sora said quietly.

"Since before Season 1 ended," Ren said.

On the desk: files.

Kuronagi’s handwriting.

Messy.

Obsessed.

Kaze picked one up.

*PROJECT: NINTH GRAVE.*

Inside: diagrams.

The circle.

The ritual.

Notes in the margins.

_“Not enough blood.”_

_“Brother was weak.”_

_“Kaze is the key. Break him.”_

Another file.

*THE CONTRACT.*

Photocopies.

His mother’s signature.

Eight other names.

All crossed out.

All dead.

And at the bottom, a new page.

Handwritten yesterday.

_“If I can’t end it, I’ll control it.

If I can’t control it, I’ll become it.

Kaze will choose.

He always does.”_

Kaze dropped it.

"There," Yui said. She was by the bookshelf.

A journal.

Leather.

No title.

She opened it.

Read aloud.

_“Day 1 as Headmaster. The book spoke to me. It said my brother’s death wasn’t an accident. It said Kaze was chosen. Not by me. By it.”_

_“Day 12. I tried to kill Kaze in his sleep. The book stopped me. It needs him alive. For now.”_

_“Day 30. I offered it Rika. It laughed. It wants the Anchor. Only the Anchor.”_

_“Day 44. I think I’m losing my mind. I hear my brother. He says I’m next.”_

She closed it.

"He’s scared," Yui said.

"Good," Sora said.

In the bottom drawer: a key.

Old.

Iron.

With a tag.

*NINTH GRAVE.*

"That’s what we need," Taku said. "To open it. On our terms."

"Or to lock it," Kaze said.

They took everything.

Files.

The journal.

The key.

Photos.

As they left, Ren stopped.

"Guys."

On the desk, a new piece of paper.

It hadn’t been there before.

_YOU TOOK MY NOTES.

I’LL TAKE ONE OF YOURS.

MIDNIGHT. CHAPEL.

BRING THE KEY.

OR I BRING THE NEXT NAME._

_-K_

"He was here," Ren whispered. "While we were here."

They ran.

Back at the dorm, they laid everything out.

A timeline.

A map.

A plan.

"The key opens the Ninth Grave," Kaze said. "That’s where the ritual happens. That’s where it’s strongest."

"So we don’t go," Rika said.

"We have to," Kaze said. "If we don’t, he takes someone."

"Then we go prepared," Sora said. "All of us."

"No," Kaze said. "He said bring the key. Alone. If I bring you, someone dies."

"Like last time?" Aoi asked. "When you went alone and almost died?"

"Yes," Kaze said.

"Then I’m coming," Aoi said.

They argued.

For an hour.

In the end, Kaze won.

He would go.

Alone.

At midnight.

With the key.

The others would watch.

From outside.

From the roof.

From everywhere.

At 11:30pm, Kaze left.

The feather was in his pocket.

He didn’t know why.

The chapel was dark.

No candles this time.

No Kuronagi at the altar.

Just the trapdoor.

Open.

And a voice.

"Down here."

Kaze went down.

Kuronagi was sitting in the circle.

No book.

No knife.

Just the journal from his office in his lap.

"You brought it," he said, nodding at Kaze’s pocket.

Kaze didn’t answer.

"Good," Kuronagi said. "We need to talk before this starts."

"Start what?"

"The next phase," Kuronagi said. "The book is paused. Not dead. It’s waiting. And it told me how to wake it up."

"How?"

"Sacrifice," Kuronagi said. "But not yours. Mine."

Kaze stared.

"I’m tired, Kaze," Kuronagi said. "Of the voices. Of my brother. Of this. If I die in the circle, willingly, it resets. Clean. No more eights. No more ones. Just... nothing."

"Why tell me?"

"Because you have to let me," Kuronagi said. "And because if I’m wrong, I need you to kill me before it takes over."

Kaze didn’t move.

"Do you trust me?" Kuronagi asked.

"No."

"Good," Kuronagi said. "Neither do I."

He stood.

Walked to the center of the circle.

Held out his hands.

"Do it."

Kaze didn’t move.

"The key," Kuronagi said. "Put it in the lock."

In the floor, a small keyhole.

In the center of the circle.

Kaze hadn’t seen it before.

He knelt.

Put the key in.

Turned it.

The floor opened.

Not a trapdoor.

A hole.

Dark.

And from it, cold air.

And a sound.

Like breathing.

The Ninth Grave.

Kuronagi stepped to the edge.

"Last chance to stop me," he said.

Kaze said nothing.

Kuronagi jumped.

There was no scream.

Just a thud.

Then silence.

The air changed.

The candles on the walls lit themselves.

The Veil Book appeared on the altar.

Open.

A new page.

_THE KEEPER HAS FALLEN._

_THE DEBT TRANSFERS._

_NEW KEEPER REQUIRED._

Kaze backed away.

"No," he said.

The book flipped.

To a page with his name.

*KAZE RYUTO.*

Under it:

_ACCEPT THE BOOK._

_OR THE CYCLE RESUMES._

Footsteps.

Above.

The others.

They’d come down anyway.

"What happened?" Sora asked.

"He jumped," Kaze said.

"Where?"

"Down."

They looked into the hole.

Nothing.

Just dark.

The book slammed shut.

Then opened again.

A new name.

*AOI SHIMIZU.*

"No," Kaze said.

The book flipped again.

*SORA KITANO.*

*REN HAYASHI.*

*YUI NAGISA.*

*TAKU ODA.*

*RIKA ASUKA.*

*HANA ITO.*

All of them.

All at once.

"The cycle resumed," Ren said. "Because there’s no Keeper."

"Then someone has to be Keeper," Kaze said.

"Not you," Aoi said.

"It has to be," Kaze said. "Or it takes all of you. Right now."

He picked up the book.

It was cold.

Heavier than before.

It hummed.

The first page turned.

Words appeared.

In his handwriting.

_I, KAZE RYUTO, ACCEPT THE ROLE OF KEEPER._

_I WILL HOLD THE DEBT._

_I WILL CHOOSE WHO PAYS._

He felt it.

In his chest.

Like a hand closing around his heart.

The voices.

Dozens.

Whispering.

_Welcome, Keeper._

He dropped the book.

It didn’t fall.

It floated.

Then settled in his hands.

He looked at his friends.

They were staring.

Terrified.

"I’m sorry," Kaze said.

"Don’t be," Aoi said. "We’ll figure it out."

"There’s nothing to figure out," Kaze said. "I’m the monster now."

The book opened.

To a page with a contract.

The same as his mother’s.

_EIGHT FOR ONE._

_SIGN TO CONTINUE._

Kaze stared at it.

Then he did something none of them expected.

He tore the page out.

The room shook.

The lights exploded.

The Whisper’s voice came back, but different.

Angry.

_YOU CANNOT—_

Kaze shoved the torn page into his pocket.

Picked up the feather.

And stabbed it into the book.

The book screamed.

A sound like metal and bone.

Then went silent.

The light died.

The circle faded.

The hole in the floor closed.

Silence.

Kaze was on his knees.

The book was in pieces.

Ash.

The feather was gone.

"What did you do?" Ren asked.

"I broke it," Kaze said.

"For real this time?" Sora asked.

"I don’t know," Kaze said. "But it’s not a book anymore."

He opened his hand.

Ash.

And in the ash, a single word.

*PAUSED.*

They stayed in the chapel until dawn.

No one spoke.

Hana slept on Rika’s lap.

Yui drew the circle, then crossed it out.

Taku counted exits.

Ren checked his phone.

No static.

Sora sharpened his bokken, then stopped.

At sunrise, Kaze stood.

"Let’s go home," he said.

Home.

The dorm.

Floor 9.

They put the ash in a jar.

Next to the feather jar.

Two jars.

Two lies.

Day 7 began.

Four days until the new moon.

But the calendar didn’t matter anymore.

They tried to live.

Aoi went to class.

Ren went to class.

Sora went to the gym.

Yui painted.

Taku built things.

Rika cried in the shower.

Hana stayed with them.

Kaze watched the box.

The book didn’t come back.

The names didn’t appear.

Kuronagi didn’t come back.

On Day 9, Ren found something.

In the ashes.

A fragment.

A piece of paper that didn’t burn.

One sentence.

_THE KEEPER IS DEAD.

THE DEBT LIVES._

"What does that mean?" Aoi asked.

"It means we didn’t win," Kaze said.

"But we didn’t lose either," Sora said.

That night, Kaze dreamed.

For the first time in days.

He was in the Ninth Grave.

It wasn’t a hole.

It was a room.

With eight beds.

And one empty.

And in the empty bed,

a shadow.

With Kaze’s face.

The shadow looked up.

"Your turn," it said.

Kaze woke up screaming.

Aoi was there in seconds.

"What is it?"

"It’s not over," Kaze said. "It’s just waiting for me to sleep again."

He didn’t sleep after that.

Day 10.

Two days until the new moon.

A letter came.

No stamp.

No address.

Just his name.

Inside:

A photo.

Of Kuronagi.

At the bottom of the Ninth Grave.

Alive.

Eyes open.

Smiling.

On the back:

_I LIED.

I’M NOT DEAD.

I’M THE GRAVE NOW._

_SEE YOU SOON, KEEPER._

_-K_

Kaze showed them.

No one spoke.

"He’s down there," Ren said. "With it."

"Then we go down," Sora said.

"We can’t," Kaze said. "If we open it, we let it out."

"So what do we do?" Rika asked.

"We wait," Kaze said.

"And when it comes, we fight."

Night fell.

Day 11.

One day left.

They didn’t sleep.

They sat in a circle.

The box in the middle.

The jars next to it.

Weapons on the floor.

At 11:59pm, the lights went out.

Not the power.

The light.

Like something blew it out.

In the dark, a voice.

Kuronagi’s.

But wrong.

Deeper.

Wet.

_KEEPER._

Kaze stood.

"I’m here."

_YOU BROKE THE LAW._

"I made a new one."

_LAW DOES NOT CHANGE. ONLY THE PUNISHMENT._

The door opened.

No one opened it.

Standing there,

Headmaster Kuronagi.

But wrong.

His skin was gray.

His eyes were black.

And in his chest, a hole.

With the Veil Book inside it.

Beating.

"You," Kaze said.

"I am the Grave now," Kuronagi said. "And I am hungry."

He stepped in.

The others stood.

Weapons up.

Kuronagi looked at them.

"Eight," he said. "You’re missing one."

"She’s dead," Sora said.

"Then seven," Kuronagi said. "And one new. That’s eight. Close enough."

He reached for Hana.

Kaze moved.

He didn’t have a weapon.

He had the jar.

With the ash.

He threw it.

The ash hit Kuronagi’s chest.

Where the book was.

Kuronagi screamed.

A sound that wasn’t human.

The book in his chest cracked.

Black ink poured out.

"Now!" Kaze shouted.

They moved.

All of them.

Together.

Sora with the bokken.

Ren with a taser.

Taku with salt.

Yui with paint and holy water.

Rika with a knife.

Aoi with her hands.

Hana with a chair.

They hit him.

All at once.

Kuronagi staggered.

The book cracked more.

Ink on the floor.

Ink on the walls.

Ink on them.

_YOU WILL PAY,_ Kuronagi gurgled.

"Already did," Kaze said.

He grabbed the book.

Pulled it from Kuronagi’s chest.

Kuronagi collapsed.

The body went still.

The ink stopped.

Kaze held the book.

It was warm.

And cracked.

And dying.

He looked at his friends.

Bloody.

Breathing.

Alive.

He opened the book.

One last time.

Blank pages.

All of them.

Except the last.

_THE DEBT IS PAID._

_THE CYCLE IS BROKEN._

_THE KEEPER IS FREE._

The book turned to dust in his hands.

Silence.

Then Aoi started crying.

Then everyone did.

Day 12.

The new moon.

And nothing happened.

They buried Kuronagi next to Mika.

No one said a prayer.

They just stood there.

After, they went back to the dorm.

The box was empty.

The jars were empty.

The room was quiet.

Kaze sat by the window.

No visions.

No voices.

Just quiet.

Aoi sat next to him.

"Is it over?" she asked.

"I think so," Kaze said.

"What now?"

"Now we live," Kaze said.

He took her hand.

It was warm.

Outside, the sun came up.

On a new day.

With no names in a book.
