Autumn's Symphony

"Life has always been unfair to her. Everything she had cherished was taken away, leaving  nothing but sorrows for her," Skylar.

Year 2005

It was a brisk fall day. The sunburnt leaves danced in the autumn wind's concerto. A young girl in her mid-twenties, stood near the window capturing  a glimpse of the golden brown petals that were falling on the ground graciously, with her forest green eyes; as the trees swayed to the breeze in the autumn's symphony.

A few strands at the tip of her hair was in the mid-air, until she brushed them off with her  fingers such that the errant strands wouldn't swirl around when the wind blows through her hair again. She let out a deep sigh, once again taking in sight of the beautiful leaves that carpeted on the ground. She found the dead leaves more interesting than what was happening around her.

After leaving with her uncle when her mother fell sick, Skylar had to face many things in her life. She thought living with her uncle would reduce the pain in her chest, she still had a family, she thought but it didn't take her too long to realise that she was wrong after her mother took her last breath. Skylar’s uncle and his wife didn't like her presence in their house, they couldn't spend their expenses on her and Skylar had to find a part time job to live on her own expenses. After she had turned eighteen, she left her uncle's house and started to live as a paying guest.

Life has always been unfair to her at every point in her life. Just when she thought her problems would solve, another problem would arise. Sometimes Skylar didn't understand why did she have to go through all these struggles in her life, she didn't deserve this but somehow she learnt to accept her fate and took it as a challenge, giving up was never in her dictionary.

Her fingers gripped the  file in her hands, her eyes were closed for a few moments. She  had been trying her best to stay confident or at least look confident. But after seeing the people who came for the interview, she almost lost her hopes, everyone who were waiting looked confident. They were beautiful and their clothes were far better than what she wore, she looked simple and plain with no make up or an eyeliner. She should've bought an eyeliner and applied to her eyes at least but she was never a kind of person who showed interest in such things.

"Ms. Byrne?" she opened her eyes and looked at a woman who took her name.

"You are Ms. Byrne?" came a skeptical question from the woman after Skylar responded.

Skylar nodded her head in confirmation.

It was clear that the woman doubted for some reason and asked again to confirm but masked it with  smile the next second but Skylar didn't miss to notice the change in the woman's expression.

The interviewees in the room looked at the girl who was as surprised and clue-less as them. People who recognized the woman as an  employee, didn't understand as to why Mr. Wolfrick's manager came for the girl. Confusion was marred on their faces, few were surprised while others looked at her in a way that Skylar felt uncomfortable by their stares, she never wanted any attention but still received it from them. She took a deep breathe and  ignored the stares to follow the woman who came for her. The woman appeared to be in her  late-twenties or early-thirties, she was classy and wore better clothes than her, thought Skylar to herself. She noticed the name on her id-card, Mrs. Mercy Bates, read Skylar in her mind.

Skylar wanted to speak to Mrs. Bates, she wanted to ask many questions but she didn't and silently followed the woman's lead. Just when Skylar and the woman were about to enter into an elevator, Skylar caught a sight of four elevators on one side of the floor and then there was another elevator on the other side. It must be a private elevator, thought Skylar when Mrs. Bates punched the keys. Not only did she notice the elevators but also noticed the surprised and confused looks of the staff members with her eyes when she walked past them, she was a good observer.

Skylar looked at the ceiling and every corner in the elevator to avoid Mrs. Bates's gaze at her. She could see that the woman was staring at her, it was not with hatred or jealousy, it was something she couldn't fathom at that moment. The minutes felt like an eternity and she didn't stop pressing her fingers out of nervousness.

"I don't understand," Skylar heard the woman's voice. Based on the voice, Skylar guessed the woman would be in her early- thirties but she looked younger than she would be. "You are not a kind of person he would prefer," though Mrs. Bates was talking to Skylar, it sounded as if the woman was speaking to herself, as if she was to find an answer.

'What did she even mean?'

Asked Skylar in her mind and before Skylar could speak to the woman, the doors of the elevator were wide open for them to leave. Mrs. Bates walked and guided her to a room. There were few women who saw Skylar and exchanged glances with their colleagues but not even a single person tried to speak to the other.

"He is waiting for you," said Mrs. Bates before knocking the door and then left when Skylar stood at the closed door.

She took a deep breathe again and  opened the door only to see a young man in the room who had a smile on his face, a charming one. His black hair was neatly combed and a tiny dimple on one of his cheek that was hardly seen made him look more attractive. He was up on his feet as soon as he saw her and then stood at the front of his desk and took the  support of the edge of his desk.

"Skylar Byrne, is it?" her name rolled on the tip of his tongue. He looked like a charming prince when a chuckle escaped from his lips; his eyes tiwinkled as if he recollected a beautiful memory from the past.

Skylar had no clue for the reason she was called to his chamber at that time but she knew him, Trevor Wolfrick. The articles and the interviews helped to know about him a little more and she was more than nervous under his scrutinizing gaze.

"Get me a coffee, Ms. Byrne!"

'Did he just call her for the coffee?' She asked herself.

It took few seconds for Skylar to process his words. With a single nod, she left his room. There was no need for her to ask someone for the way to the pantry because she noticed the place on her way to Trevor's room.

Trevor had a smile on his face. How many years has it been since he saw her, he thought. Though it has been many years, he didn't forget her eyes. Those big forest green eyes that spoke volumes than her voice.
