Chapter 5~ Wake Me When It’s Over

Chapter 5\~ Wake Me When It’s Over

Dawn was still it talking even after everything was confirmed that their mother died from sleeping pill overdose. Dana being the first to take the call once the police contacted their house. She was staying overnight in her favorite hotel like every other Thursdays where she pampers herself with a massage day, manicure, pedicure.

This was the first time Davon and Dane was quiet. Family members piled up in their house giving their sympathy. Dawn knew most of them felt happy as they didn’t like his mom. Destiny was unaware of the situation and was lost in her little world. She asked about their mother only once and after getting a response that she went somewhere fun for a long time she was satisfied and kept playing.

Dawn was exempted from training camp for the first week but had to report the following week. Dana chose to stay at a friends place for a while due to the shock and not wanted to be alone. Dawn kept thinking of what to do with Destiny as he did not want any family member taking her. Any time this conversation will arise he would dismiss it then and there. The funeral was done the next day and he thought of the perfect idea. He called Hwan the minute he reached taking a bag filling it up with his and Destiny’s clothes.

“Hello, Dawn!!?” Came the sweet voice that made him want to cry but he held it in. “Yeah, uh is it possible to ask your mom if I can sleep over st your place” he asked unsure... “MUM, CAN DAWN STAY OVER? #^#%@$&#%OKAY I’LLLET HIM KNOW.....Sorry she said yes” Dawn had to laugh. He really was different when he was not there with him. Dawn informed his timing but left out the small bundle he would be carrying with him.

At around 7pm Dawn was parked in front of Hwan’s house and came to the door holding two bags and a sleeping Destiny all wrapped up. He rang the door bell until he heard running and screaming that sounded like Hwan and his sister and surely both of them stood in front of him Hwan’s sister was the first to break the silence “You have a child?” She was very expressive with her face and that caused Dawn to laugh “No, she’s my sister. Her name is Destiny” he replied while entering the house. Hwan remained quiet throughout the exchange of information that his sister was inquiring about.

“Why are you standing there, have a sit. Sulli take his bag to Hwan’s room” Hwan’s mother instructed. She came and hug him tightly before caressing his hair affectionately. She pulled the blanket covering his little sister so she could have a better look at her. “Did you eat yet?” She asked and he shook his head to say no. “Okay, wake her up so she can eat as well.. something light” she informed getting busy in the kitchen. Hwan was still standing silent tears falling down his face not knowing why. He couldn’t be strong for Dawn at all and he knew now that he was weak. “Dow.... where we?” Asked a drowsy Destiny that was the breaking point for Hwan. He was sorbing loudly at this point and both Destiny and Dawn stared at each other of what they missed. Hwan’s mother came as soon as she heard the sorbs thinking it was Dawn but to find her son standing there crying his eyes out. “Yah. Hwan stop it now, you’ll scare Destiny.... what’s with you?”She was sort of embarrassed but concerned at the same time. His sister came down stares confused astoywhy her brother was crying like no tomorrow. “I’m sorry, I’m just sad” he stated in between sorbs. Hwan’s mother called Dawn in the kitchen to have some snacks before heading to bed. Each was handed a glass of milk with light sandwich. His sister was happy munching awake and even stole a piece from his brother’s plate humming a tune he wasn’t familiar with. “Hwan’s Mum, how do we address you?” Dawn inquired “ oh call me Omoni it means mother in korean” “ oh please we are not even korean mum” Hwan’s sister interjected. All of the laughed at that statement while coming to a comfortable silence.

Sleeping arrangements was Dawn and Destiny will sleep in Hwan’s room as he had the connecting bathroom. Hwan did not protest as his bed could accommodate all three of them just that Dawn’s feet might hang at the end but his mother was quick to fix that, placing his chest at the end of the bed and fixing it to be the same level as the mattress. They all bid good night each entering their rooms. Dawn gave Destiny a shower and showered himself. They were ready for bed and Destiny was lounge between his legs head on his chest looking at the picture from the story book that Dawn was reading to her. She started yawning a couple of times and she was asleep soon after. Dawn stayed in that position until Hwan can out from the bathroom exhausted from the crying he’s been doing. He smiled at the two and joined them on the bed. Now that they were alone Dawn could not hold it in and found himself crying silently while holding onto Hwan with his free hand. Hwan was crying again soon after. They went to bed with Destiny between them holding onto her plushie with one leg on Hwan’s stomach and her head on Dawn’s chest.

Hwan had to leave early for school but he didn’t want to go, he wanted to stay with Dawn and Destiny but his mother kicked him out. Destiny was still sleeping peaceful in the most uncomfortable position but that was normal for her. Dawn was seated at the table in the kitchen watching omoni cooking away lunch for them to have later. She was already fond of both Dawn an Destiny so Dawn did not find it hard for her to take care of her when he goes to training camp. His birthday came and went. It was the first without his mother or family members. Training camp kept him busy and he was not worried if Destiny would be okay as he knew she was in good hands. Hwan fell in love with her the first day and they already bonded well. The spoke about whatever and relate to each other a lot Hwan’s words.

The last week of being at the camp was fastly approaching. Dawn didn’t see much of the others as they were all in different teams with separate schedules. He knew that they will meet at the last day competition before going home the same day and that day was today. Most of the obstacles were easy except the last one where they had to dodge the shooting balls. It was more like an army training camp to help them before college. Dawn had fun and couldn’t wait to see his princess and little flower. He met the guys on the bus where they sympathized with him and as quick it was brought up it was quickly dismissed also. Once they reached the school each made their way home with Dawn heading to Hwan’s house. He saw Destiny playing through the window laughing at whatever Hwan was saying. He stood in front of the door and rang the door bell. Little voice and laughter was heard behind the closed door. Once it was opened he was met with Hwan’s family with cake and a banner saying welcome home “Doooowwww” Destiny ran to him and wrapped her little arms around him “ Sorry I drink a bit” he excuse himself while hugging everyone. They allowed him to freshen up while they set up everything.

That night was all laughter and happiness especially Destiny. She had so many stories to share to her brother but she was glued to Hwan’s side majority of the evening. Alas they all bid goodnight after cleaning up the kitchen. Destiny was lounge in her brother’s lap chatting away informing Dawn about her many adventures during his absence. Dawn knew that they had to go back home soon as they have been away for too long. He discussed the same to Omoni informing her that they will visit every weekend if she allows and that they too may visit anytime.

Destiny was a bit sad to leave her new found family, even shedding a few tears but quickly recovered when promised to visit and stay on weekends and vacation. Dawn saw his father’s car parked outside not knowing what to expect. He went inside carrying a sleeping Destiny. Going directly in his room settling her on the bed noticing that they cleaned already. He came outside in the living room finding his Dad sitting on the couch with liquor in his hand. They acknowledged each other with a nod. This was the first time he had seen the vulnerable side of the older man. He looked nothing like the father he grew up with. It was like he was there but not really there.

“I believe that you will have to take over sooner than expected” the older man was the first to break the silence. “I will teach you everything before this year ends, Kenneth the Vice President will take over until you finish university” he continued. “What about you?” Dawn asked in return. “I am done, everything was being prepared for you when you come of age I was too greedy thinking that I could keep it all to myself when it was never mine to begin with and now I understood what your mother was trying to tell me for so long” his father was crying at this point. There were a lot of first in a matter of minutes. Dawn was tired, no exhausted. He was burdened with everyone’s issues that he couldn’t focus on himself and the people he loves. The grown ups should be the ones to handle whatever is happening not pin it on their kids, making them feel guilty for something they had no part in and this was one of those scenarios.

Two more months and he would be free from this house and these people that did not appreciate his mother enough. He knew that Destiny will be left in good care in the future and he was not worried. Once he gets done with university Hwan would be old enough to move in with him. It was the plan he wanted to materialize. Was he moving too fast?, he literally didn’t care. He just wants to have the young boy all to himself. They never spoke of the future as it never arise in any conversation they’ve had but before he goes to university he will talk to Hwan about it.
