Flicker: The Freshman's Gamble
The iron gates of the Aethelgard Institute are thirty feet high, topped with gold-leafed spears that look sharp enough to pierce the sky.
Adrian sits in the driver’s seat of a 2005 sedan that smells like stale coffee and desperation. His hands are shaking on the wheel. Under the skin of his forearms, a faint silver light pulses—The Flicker. It’s weak, erratic, like a dying lightbulb.
He looks out the window at the other cars in line: matte-black SUVs and sleek Italian sports cars. The students inside look like they were carved from marble—perfect hair, tailored blazers, and eyes that glow with the steady, terrifying hum of "Pure" Orbs.
Adrian: (To himself) Don't look at them. Just get to the gate.
He reaches the checkpoint. A Sentinel in a faceless silver mask leans down. The Sentinel doesn't carry a gun; he carries a heavy staff that ripples with gravity.
Sentinel: Name?
Adrian: Adrian... Adrian Thorne. Scholarship.
The Sentinel scans a tablet. A holographic screen pops up. In big, red letters, it reads: RANK 2,000 / 2,000. The Sentinel lets out a short, metallic snort of derision and waves him through.
The Grand Hall
The interior of the university is a cathedral of glass and dark mahogany. A massive digital screen hangs in the center of the hall: THE LEDGER. It lists every student's name and their "Market Value."
At the top, in gold: #1 MARCUS VAN DORN – DARK MATTER TIER.
At the very bottom, flickering in a dull gray: #2,000 ADRIAN THORNE – LIGHT FLICKER TIER.
A group of "Legacy" students stands near the screen, laughing. In the center is Marcus. He’s taller than the others, his blonde hair swept back, his eyes two solid pits of ink-black energy.
Marcus: Look at that. The Sages are getting desperate. They’re letting "glitches" into the Spire now.
Marcus turns his gaze toward Adrian. The shadows on the floor crawl toward Adrian’s feet like hungry snakes.
Marcus: Hey, Flicker. You’re in my way.
Adrian: (Voice steady) There's ten feet of hallway, Marcus. Walk around.
The room goes silent. Chloe laughs behind her hand, her iridescent skin shimmering like a diamond. Silas steps forward, his massive 6’5” frame casting a shadow over Adrian.
Marcus: (Smiling coldly) I don't walk around trash. I walk through it.
Marcus raises a hand. A ball of dark, crushing gravity forms in his palm. The air in the hallway begins to scream. Adrian’s silver veins pulse violently. He feels the urge to run, but his feet are glued to the floor by Marcus’s power.
Suddenly, a voice cuts through the tension like a blade.
Maya: That’s enough, Marcus. The High Sage is watching. You wouldn't want to lose your "Perfect" rating on the first day, would you?
Maya stands at the end of the hall. Her raven-black hair flows over a lace collar, and her purple eyes are glowing with a quiet, dangerous arcane mist.
Marcus drops his hand. The gravity dissipates. The shadows retreat. He brushes a piece of imaginary lint off his blazer and smirks at Adrian.
Marcus: Enjoy the view from the bottom, Thorne. It’s the only one you’re ever going to have.

The Dorms – Night
Adrian sits on a thin mattress in a room that feels more like a prison cell than a dorm. He stares at his hand. He concentrates.
Flicker. His hand disappears for a micro-second, then returns.
Flicker. He tries to hold it, to stay invisible, but his chest burns with a sharp, stabbing pain. His Orb is hungry. It’s small, but it’s biting him from the inside.
There’s a knock on the door. It’s Bryan. He’s leaning against the frame, a smirk on his face and blue sparks dancing in his blonde buzz-cut.
Bryan: Rough first day, huh? Don't worry about Marcus. He’s a prick. I’m Bryan. Rank 1,500. The "Rage-Bait" of the school.
Adrian: Adrian.
Bryan: I know who you are, #2,000. You’re the guy who didn't blink when the Dark Matter kid tried to erase him. I like that. (He looks around the small room) Ready to see the real school?
Bryan pulls a small, glowing device from his pocket—Orb-Tech.
Bryan: The Sages think we're just batteries. I think it's time we started drawing some of that power back.
