Episode 5: The Secret Library

The aftermath of the duel has left the campus in a state of Cold War. No one talks to Adrian in the hallways, but everyone watches him. He is a walking anomaly—a Rank 2,000 who survived a Rank 100.

Late that night, a cryptic note appears on Adrian’s pillow: "The ink remembers what the stone forgets. 12 AM. The Restricted Stacks."

Adrian sneaks through the corridors, his Flicker acting as a cloaking device against the roving security drones. He reaches the Great Library, a tower of books so high the top shelves are lost in a permanent fog. Waiting there is Professor Sterling, hunched over a desk lit by a single, flickering candle.

Sterling: "You move like a thief, Thorne. That’s good. In this school, honesty is a death sentence."

Adrian: "You sent the note. Why the mystery, Professor?"

Sterling: "Because the walls have ears, and the ears belong to Zora. Look at this."

Sterling slides an ancient, yellowed parchment across the table. It’s a blueprint of the University, but there is a second set of rooms drawn in invisible ink that only glows when Adrian’s hand is near it.

Sterling: "Your 'Flicker' isn't a weak power, Adrian. It’s an unfinished one. You aren't just jumping through space; you are vibrating at the frequency of the Void. The Sages didn't give you a Tier-1 Orb. They gave you a 'Null Orb'—a failed experiment from the original founders."

Adrian: "A failed experiment? So I’m broken?"

Sterling: "No. You are the only one who can enter the Silent Archive. It’s a room located between the atoms of this building. Only someone who can flicker their own existence can open the door."

The Silent Archive

Following Sterling’s instructions, Adrian stands before a blank stone wall in the basement of the library. He closes his eyes and focuses on the burning ache in his chest. Instead of flickering forward, he tries to flicker inward.

The stone wall shimmers like water. Adrian steps through.

The room is small, cold, and filled with Spirit-Ink jars that glow with a haunting blue light. In the center is a single pedestal holding a diary. Adrian opens it, his eyes widening as he reads the entries from 1926.

Adrian: "The Orbs... they aren't ancient spirits. They’re... they’re human souls? The first class of Aethelgard... they didn't graduate. They were the first harvest."

Suddenly, a sharp, cold wind whips through the room. The blue jars shatter.

Diana: "Drop the book, Adrian. Now."

Diana stands in the doorway, her white-hot fire licking at her fingertips. She looks terrified.

Adrian: "Diana? What are you doing here?"

Diana: "Protecting you, you idiot! Marcus followed you. He’s right outside the threshold, but he can't get in because he’s too solid. He’s waiting for the moment you step out to kill you and take that diary."

Adrian: "Then we don't step out. Sterling said this room is between atoms. Is there another way out?"

Diana: "There’s a ventilation shaft that leads to the Greenhouse, but it’s guarded by Silas. We have to fight our way out."

The Escape

Adrian and Diana crawl through the narrow, dusty shafts. Above them, they can hear the heavy, metallic thuds of Silas patrolling the Greenhouse.

Diana: "When we drop, I’ll flash-blind him. You use that flicker of yours to grab his keys. We need them to get Maya out of the High Spire tonight."

Adrian: "Why are you helping me, Diana? Your family is literally the board of directors for this place."

Diana: "Because my brother was Rank 1,900 three years ago. They told me he 'transferred' to a school in Europe. I found his signet ring in the trash heaps behind the Pit yesterday. I’m done being a 'Legacy.'"

They drop from the ceiling. Silas turns, his eyes glowing like embers, his fists turning into solid granite.

Silas: "Traitors. Marcus was right about you, Diana."

Diana screams, unleashing a torrent of white flames that turn the Greenhouse into an oven. Silas roars, charging through the fire, unaffected by the heat. Adrian flickers behind him, but Silas is too fast—he swats Adrian aside like a fly.

Adrian: "He’s too dense! I can't get close!"

Diana: "Flicker the glass, Adrian! The roof!"

Adrian looks up. The Greenhouse roof is made of massive, reinforced lead-glass. He focuses all his energy. He doesn't flicker himself; he flickers the molecular bonds of the glass directly above Silas.

The glass doesn't break; it simply ceases to be solid for a split second. Thousands of pounds of heavy shards rain down in a silent, deadly curtain. Silas is buried under the weight.

Adrian lunges forward, snatching the Master Key from Silas's belt.

Adrian: "Let's go. Before the Sentinels track the heat signature."

The Shadows – Midnight

They reach the edge of the woods, panting and covered in soot.

Diana: "You have the key. But Adrian... that diary. What did it say about the 'Final Harvest'?"

Adrian: "It said the Sages don't just want the energy. They’re trying to bring someone back. Someone named 'The Founder.' And they need a Tier-5 Arcane vessel to do it."

Diana: "Maya. They’re going to use Maya as a shell for a dead man."

Adrian: "Not if I burn this whole school down first."
