The atmosphere in the Great Dining Hall is thick with the scent of rosemary lamb and cold terror. While the "Legacies" at the center tables feast on five-course meals, the lower-ranked students stare at their plates in silence. The "Stability Sensors" on the ceiling are glowing a dim, cautious yellow.

Adrian sits with Bryan, his eyes scanning the room. He notices Leo sitting three tables away, his hands trembling so hard his fork clatters against the porcelain.
Adrian: "Look at his eyes. The light is almost gone."
Bryan: "That’s the Hunger. When your rank drops too low, the school's floor-siphons stop giving you 'Passive Ether.' Your Orb starts eating your own nervous system to stay alive. It’s a slow death, man."
Suddenly, the heavy oak doors swing open. Marcus walks in, his black blazer draped over his shoulders like a cape. He isn't walking; he’s prowling. He stops at Leo’s table and leans down, sniffing the air.
Marcus: "Smell that? It’s the scent of a fading soul. You’re empty, Leo. You’re taking up a chair that belongs to someone with actual potential."
Leo: "I... I’m trying, Marcus. I just need more time to calibrate the orb—"
Marcus: "Time is for winners. For you? There’s only the Pit."
Marcus reaches out and taps Leo’s chest. A spark of Dark Matter jumps from his finger. It’s a small move, but for someone as weak as Leo, it’s like a heart attack. Leo collapses to the floor, his body convulsing.
The sensors on the ceiling snap from Yellow to a violent, screaming Red.
Adrian: "He’s baiting the Sentinels. He’s forcing Leo to go Hollow right here."
Bryan: "Adrian, stay down! If you interfere, the Sentinels will flag you as a co-conspirator."
Adrian: "I'm already #2,000, Bryan. What are they going to do? Rank me lower?"
Adrian stands up. He concentrates on the silver veins in his wrist. He doesn't aim for Marcus; he aims for the Stability Sensor directly above them.
Flicker.
He projects his energy upward, short-circuiting the sensor. The red light above Leo goes dark. The high-pitched alarm cuts off. For a moment, the room is plunged into a confused silence.
Marcus: "Who did that? Who touched the grid?"
Marcus turns, his eyes landing on Adrian. The shadows in the corners of the room begin to rise, forming into jagged spikes of black glass.
Marcus: "You again. The glitch. You think because Maya likes you, you're untouchable? I’ll peel that pathetic flicker right out of your skin."
Diana: "Actually, Marcus, he’s right. Killing a student in the Dining Hall is a Tier 1 violation. If the Sages come in here and see you’ve damaged the 'Harvest Property,' they’ll dock your rank. And we both know how much you love being #1."
Diana stands up from the Elite table, her eyes cool and calculating. She doesn't look at Adrian, but her intervention gives him enough time to grab Leo by the arm and pull him toward the exit.
Marcus: "You’re picking sides, Diana. That’s a dangerous gamble for a girl whose family depends on my father’s investments."
Diana: "I’m not picking sides. I’m just protecting the furniture. This hall is expensive."

The Infirmary – Late Night
The infirmary is empty, safe for the hum of the medical pods. Kemi is there, wiping down a glass counter. She looks at Adrian and Bryan as they drag a semi-conscious Leo into a chair.
Kemi: "He’s far gone. The Hunger has started eating his memories. By tomorrow, he won't remember his own name."
Adrian: "There has to be a way to recharge him. Can we give him some of our Ether?"
Kemi: "Transferring energy is forbidden. It leaves a 'Signature Trace.' The Sages will know the moment you do it. They’ll see it as a theft of school property."
Adrian: "Then we don't transfer it. We 'flicker' it."
Adrian places his hand on Leo’s chest. He doesn't try to push his energy in. Instead, he tries to vibrate his Orb at the same frequency as Leo’s fading pulse. He’s trying to bridge the gap without leaving a trace.
Bryan: "Adrian, stop. Your own light is turning gray. You’re draining yourself!"
Adrian: "Just... one... second... more..."
A flash of blinding silver light fills the room. Leo gasps, his eyes snapping open. The gray tint in his skin recedes, replaced by a faint, healthy glow. He looks at Adrian, confused.
Leo: "I... I remember the smell of rain. I remember my mom."
Kemi: "It worked. But look at the Ledger, Adrian."
They look at the small monitor on the wall.
RANK #2,000: ADRIAN THORNE. STABILITY: 12% (CRITICAL).
Adrian: "I'm fine. I just need to sleep."
Bryan: "You’re not fine. You just put a target on your back bigger than the Spire. Marcus is going to come for you, and now you don't even have the strength to flicker away."
Adrian: "Then he better not miss."
