The Day I Woke Up

A Strange Morning Aoi Tanaka woke up before his alarm for the first time in months.

The sunlight leaking through his curtains felt unusually warm, almost like it was nudging him awake on purpose.

He sat up slowly, rubbing his eyes, and felt something unfamiliar settle in his chest.

Calmness.

Not the usual nervous flutter he got whenever he thought about Miyu Asahina, the girl he’d admired since middle school.

Not the restless energy that pushed him to follow her around, offer help she didn’t ask for, or imagine a future she never promised.

Just… clarity.“I should stop bothering her,” he whispered to himself.

The words surprised him.

They didn’t hurt.

They simply felt true.

He got dressed, tied his uniform neatly, and looked at himself in the mirror.

For once, he didn’t imagine what Miyu would think of his appearance.

He just wanted to look like someone he could respect.

Scene 2 — A Different Entrance

When Aoi walked into class, the usual chatter filled the room.

Miyu sat by the window, sunlight catching the soft waves of her hair.

Normally, Aoi would walk straight to her, greet her with too much enthusiasm, and try to start a conversation she didn’t always want.

But today, he walked past her without a word.

He sat at his desk, pulled out his notebook, and began reviewing yesterday’s math problems.

Miyu stared for a moment longer, her lips parting slightly.

Scene 3 — Whispers and Rumors

By lunchtime, the shift in Aoi’s behavior had already become a topic of conversation.

Aoi sat under his favorite tree, enjoying the breeze.

He opened his bento and ate quietly, savoring the peace he’d never allowed himself before.

His best friend, Riku Sakamoto, dropped down beside him with a dramatic sigh.

Riku’s suspicion — “Okay, spill it.

What’s going on with you?”

Aoi’s change — “I realized chasing someone who doesn’t like me back is pointless.”

Riku stared at him like he’d just confessed to being an alien.

“You’re telling me you’re done with Miyu?

Just like that?”

Aoi nodded.

“I’m not angry. I’m not sad. I just… woke up.”

Riku leaned back, whistling.

“Man, this is gonna shake the whole class.”

Aoi didn’t think so.

After school, Aoi packed his bag quietly.

He was about to leave when he heard footsteps approaching.

Miyu stood beside his desk, her expression unreadable.

“Tanaka-kun… can I talk to you?”

Aoi looked up, surprised.

She rarely initiated conversations with him.

“Sure. What’s up?”

She hesitated, fingers tightening around her notebook.

“You didn’t talk to me today. Not even once.”

Aoi nodded calmly.

“Yeah. I figured I should stop bothering you.”

Miyu’s eyes widened.

“Bothering me? You weren’t— I mean… why would you think that?”

Aoi shrugged gently.

“You never seemed comfortable when I approached you. I don’t want to force myself into your space.”

Miyu opened her mouth, then closed it again.

She didn’t know what to say.

She didn’t know why her chest felt tight.

He stood up, slinging his bag over his shoulder.

“I’m not avoiding you. I’m just focusing on myself.”

He walked past her, leaving her frozen beside his desk.

For the first time, she was the one left behind.

Scene 5 — A New Distance

As Aoi walked down the hallway, he felt lighter.

He didn’t know what tomorrow would bring, but he knew he was finally moving forward.

Behind him, Miyu watched his silhouette grow smaller.

She pressed her notebook to her chest.

“Why does it bother me…?”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

She had always assumed Aoi would be there — smiling, chasing, admiring.

She never imagined a world where he simply walked away.

And now that he had…She wasn’t sure she likedit.
