The Keys of Elmesia
In the Kingdom of Elmesia, magic was more than a gift.
It was life itself.
Children learned to control it from a young age, healers used it to cure the sick, and knights wielded it to protect the kingdom. Every person possessed at least a small amount of magic.
Everyone...
Except Lyra Evermoon.
As the morning sun bathed the village of Moonvale in golden light, the streets slowly filled with people beginning their day. Merchants opened their shops while children laughed as they practiced simple magic spells.
Lyra walked quietly through the village with a small basket in her hands.
The cheerful atmosphere didn't last long.
"Look, it's the girl without magic."
A teenage boy pointed toward her.
"I heard she still trains every day."
Another laughed.
"What's the point? She'll never be able to use magic."
Several villagers whispered among themselves.
"What a waste..."
Lyra lowered her head and continued walking.
She had heard those words since she was a child.
Every day was the same.
Some pitied her.
Some mocked her.
Very few believed in her.
As she passed a fruit stall, an elderly woman smiled kindly.
"Good morning, Lyra."
"Good morning, Mrs. Elen," Lyra replied politely.
The old woman sighed after hearing the cruel whispers.
"Don't listen to them. Everyone has their own path."
Lyra smiled faintly.
"I'll be alright."
After finishing her errands, she walked beyond the village gates toward the forest she loved so much.
Unlike the village, the forest never judged her.
Birds sang from the branches overhead as a cool breeze rustled the leaves.
Reaching a familiar clearing, Lyra picked up the wooden sword she always left there.
"If I can't use magic..."
She took a deep breath.
"Then I'll become stronger another way."
She swung the sword.
Again.
And again.
Each strike became faster than the last.
Sweat rolled down her forehead.
Her arms ached.
Still, she refused to stop.
"I can do it," she whispered.
Another swing.
"I can do it."
She imagined herself standing beside the kingdom's greatest knights.
She imagined protecting the people she loved.
Even if that dream seemed impossible...
She refused to abandon it.
After several minutes, Lyra stopped and held out her free hand.
She closed her eyes.
"Please..."
She waited.
Nothing happened.
No glowing light.
No magic.
Only silence.
She smiled bitterly.
"I guess... not today either."
Just then, familiar voices echoed through the trees.
"There you are!"
Lyra turned around.
Kael waved enthusiastically as he ran toward her, followed by Rowan, Elara, and Seraphine.
"You disappeared again," Rowan joked.
"We knew we'd find you here," Kael said with a grin.
Elara folded her arms.
"You've been training since morning, haven't you?"
Lyra scratched the back of her head.
"Maybe..."
"You need to rest sometimes," Seraphine said gently.
Lyra laughed softly.
"I will."
The five friends began walking back together, chatting about their day and laughing at Rowan's jokes.
For the first time that day, Lyra forgot about the cruel words of the villagers.
Hidden deep within the forest, however...
A faint silver light flickered between the ancient trees.
It pulsed once.
Then again.
As if it were waiting...
Waiting for someone.
None of them noticed it.
But before long, that mysterious light would change Lyra's life forever and set the fate of Elmesia into motion.
