The Awakening

The forest was silent.

Not the peaceful silence Lyra had always known, but an unnatural one. The wind had stopped, the leaves no longer rustled, and even the insects had fallen quiet. It was as though the entire forest was holding its breath.

The silver light shone between the ancient trees.

Lyra took another cautious step forward.

Her heart pounded so loudly she could hear it in her ears.

"I should go back," she whispered to herself. "Mom will be worried..."

Yet her feet refused to move away.

Instead, they carried her closer.

The glowing clearing soon came into view.

In its center floated an object unlike anything Lyra had ever seen.

It was a key.

Its silver surface reflected the moonlight like polished crystal, while delicate violet patterns stretched across its body. At its center rested a deep purple gem that pulsed gently, almost like the heartbeat of a living creature.

The air around it shimmered with strange energy.

Lyra stared in amazement.

"So... this is what fell from the sky?"

She slowly circled the clearing, unable to take her eyes off the mysterious object.

The closer she came, the warmer the pendant her mother had given her became.

She instinctively held it in her hand.

"What's happening?"

The jade pendant glowed faintly before returning to normal.

Then...

A familiar voice echoed inside her mind.

"You have finally arrived."

Lyra spun around.

"W-Who's there?"

There was no one.

Only the floating key.

Another voice answered, calm and ancient.

"Do not be afraid, Child of Elmesia."

Lyra's breathing became uneven.

"I... I'm imagining this."

"No."

"You hear us because you were chosen."

Her eyes widened.

"Chosen?"

"For centuries we have waited."

"For centuries we searched."

"At last... a Keybearer stands before us once more."

Lyra shook her head.

"No... you've got the wrong person."

"I'm not special."

"I'm just Lyra."

For a brief moment, silence filled the clearing.

Then the voices spoke together.

"It is precisely because you believe that... that you were worthy."

The key suddenly shone brighter.

Its light illuminated every corner of the clearing.

Instinctively, Lyra raised a hand to shield her eyes.

"Take hold of your destiny."

Without understanding why...

She reached toward the key.

The instant her fingers touched its surface—

A blinding flash exploded across the forest.

The ground trembled violently.

Powerful waves of silver light spread through the trees, sending leaves swirling high into the night sky.

Lyra cried out as countless visions flooded her mind.

Five magnificent keys floated above an ancient kingdom.

Warriors clad in shining armor fought against a darkness that swallowed the heavens.

A city disappeared beneath endless shadows.

Then...

A lone figure stood against the darkness, refusing to fall.

The visions vanished as suddenly as they had appeared.

Lyra collapsed onto one knee, breathing heavily.

"W-What... were those?"

The key was gone.

Tiny particles of silver light drifted through the air before disappearing into her body.

She felt warmth spreading through every part of her.

A strange symbol briefly appeared on the back of her right hand before fading beneath her skin.

Then the voice returned.

"The bond is complete."

Lyra slowly looked around.

"The key..."

"It is now part of you."

"What are you?"

"I am the Key of Dusk."

One of the Five Keys of Elmesia.

Guardian of illusion.

Keeper of forgotten truths.

Lyra struggled to understand.

"Five Keys...?"

"Long ago, five guardians protected this world using our power. But time, greed, and betrayal brought their age to an end."

"Now the Keys awaken once more."

"And with them... destiny begins again."

Before Lyra could ask another question—

Crunch.

A twig snapped behind her.

She spun around instantly.

A young man stepped from the darkness, his long black coat flowing gently in the night breeze.

His crimson eyes reflected the silver light, and an unreadable smile rested on his face.

"So..."

He looked directly at Lyra.

"The Key has finally chosen its bearer."

Fear tightened Lyra's chest.

"W-Who are you?"

The stranger gave a small, respectful bow.

"My name is Valen Noctis."

His smile slowly faded.

"I've spent a very long time searching for the Five Keys."

His gaze fell upon Lyra's hand, where the faint mark had appeared moments before.

"It seems..."

"I've found the first one."

A cold shiver ran down Lyra's spine.

She instinctively stepped backward.

Valen took a single step forward.

"I'm afraid our meeting cannot end peacefully."

The forest fell silent once more.

And for the first time in her life...

Lyra realized that the moment she touched the Key—

Her ordinary life had come to an end.
